Spawnie, You're 14 Weeks!

Dear Spawnie,

You are 14 weeks and 5 days old now. I'm trying really hard to write these updates on each of your weekly pre-birth days but I've been kind of bad about doing it on the day. Hopefully next week I'll be better.

We're eating a lot more now baby. And I guess that's a good thing because it means you're growing. I've heard people use the excuse "I'm eating for two" before but someone else ruined the news for me before I even became pregnant with you... They told me that doesn't mean I get to eat an extra 2,000 calories... But more like 250. It's ok though, cause although some times it feels like it, I'm not sure if we could eat that much if we tried.

Speaking of eating, you're making me eat the craziest things lately. This week we went shopping at Target and all of a sudden you told me you wanted a hot dog. I tell ya what Spawnie, that was the best tasting thing EVER! I felt like we were in heaven eating that hot dog.

And you're not going to believe this, but you wanted another hot dog for Christmas dinner! Your daddy thought I was crazy but I told him it was what you wanted. So we drove to 7/11 and got a hot dog. It didn't taste as good as the other one though, and I'm going to be honest, I didn't feel that good after eating it. I hope you liked it though.

I'm excited every Friday when I get an update from BabyCenter on what you look like now, and how you're developing.

This week you can now squint, frown, grimace, pee, and possibly suck your thumb! Your kidneys are producing urine, and I'm sorry to say it, but you're now swimming in it... You will be until birth. You can grasp, too! I can't wait until you're grasping on to my fingers.
From your head to your bottom, you measures about 3 1/2 inches — about the size of a lemon — and you weigh 1 1/2 ounces. That's what BabyCenter says at least. M iPhone Ap says you now weigh 2-3 oz and are the size of a navel orange!!

By the end of this week, your arms will have grown to a length that's in proportion to the rest of your body! I'm really excited about that too since the next time I see you you'll look like a real little baby!
Your hands and feet are more flexible now too and I wish I could feel all of your little kicks and punches!
You're getting so much bigger now that my stomach is starting to stick out. No one at work really believes I've gained weight but when I wear certain clothes you can totally tell my tummy's getting bigger.
You have no idea how excited I am to feel you kicking in my tummy, to have your daddy feel it to, and of course I'm most excited to meet you! We both are!

Last night we watched a movie called The Business of Being Born. Your dad got grossed out quite a bit, but we talked a lot about how we'd like to bring you in the world. We're hoping to make it a personal experience with the three of us, but we're mostly hoping you'll get here safe and sound.

I love your daddy so much and every day I look at him I study his face and wonder what features you'll get from him. We love each other so much and we're so excited to welcome you to our little family! Oh, and Snoop is excited to meet you too. He can tell you're in my tummy. I know it cause he's always acting funny.

Sweet dreams little Spawnie, your mommy loves you!

***Question of the Day: How long was it before you felt your baby kicks from the insite then outside?***

My Doula Dilemma

When I think in my head of how in a perfect world, I'd like my labor to go I imagine no pain, my husband and I in a dim room with my OB and nurses, and us anxiously awaiting the arrival of our little Spawnie. My husband and I will be trained in Lamaze, or Hypnobabies/birthing and working together to get out little one out safe and sound. A beautiful experience shared with the two of us. No family in the room, no friends, just us.

I know I'm only 14 weeks pregnant but I figure I'm in my 2nd trimester, and being the "thinking ahead" person that I tend to think I am I'm already starting to think about labor and delivery (heck I've been thinking about it since before I was pregnant. I have a labor fascination). There's a lot of decisions we're trying to budget and plan for now, and I want this to be one of them.

Initially, I was thinking I'd like to try a "natural" unmediated delivery and do whatever it took to empower me to withstand the epidural. I knew if I went through labor this way I'd really want the support of my husband, but additionally, probably a doula who can help with pressure points, and positioning during hard active labor. Doula: Physical and mental supporter before during and after labor to assist the mother and her partner. (They are NOT responsible for delivering your baby.)

I've really heard nothing but good things about doula's. A friend of mine who's mom is no longer living hired a doula got after birth and said it was like having a mom that she didn't have around. Another one of my friends recently had a natural childbirth at a hospital and had two doulas she loved as well as a supportive husband. Reading about her experience was amazing. I told my husband about the experience... How my friend's doula cooked her and her husband omelets during early labor, how she went on walks with her, and helped her and helped her husband help her every step of the way. My husband, while slightly amused, didn't bite.

He had a few arguments I tried to take into consideration: 1. Doulas are for rich people. 2. I want to help, I want to be your doula (or my "dulla oblongata," as he jokes).

The first argument, while I can see his point isn't necessarily true. To him, if we can make it through labor like many of our family and friends have without one, why spend the money? "Having someone you pay there to help is something rich people do." Well... Many doula's I've found in my area don't have rates on their sites because they work with people to set the right price on an individual basis. Most I've found prices for seem to range from the $200-$1500s but I hear some are in the $2000s, depending on location, experience, services, etc. Most of my friends seem to either have a friend and get one for free, or paid about $300-$600. Everyone has said it's worth every penny.

Now, looking at those numbers my husband says no way. He's rather use that money on things for the baby, or classes, books and material we can take together to be prepared for labor. But I heard you can get doula's who are getting certified and need live births to help you for free! I wrote to my local DONA lady to get the list of women in my area who will be certifying over the next year so I can contact them about helping me out. I told my husband this and he was a little hurt that I was so insistent on this. Which brings me to the next point... Him wanting to help.

I've read great articles and posts here and there about doula's helping husbands know how to help their wives, but he really wants to be the primary support. He really hasn't had a strong opinion about too many things in this pregnancy process unless I pry, so having him out and tell me how he really feels about it made me think again. He told me he wants to take classes with me and learn how to help me through it, but he doesn't want someone with us 24/7 and "taking his place." I can even picture him shying away because there's an extra woman there, and not wanting to help as much... If I had other help. I know nurses and OBs come and go, but from my understanding you're alone most of the time until the end, under normal conditions. Then, I thought more about my labor situation and what I wanted out of it.
As usual, I did some more research, and really thought about why I wanted a natural labor... Then thought more about it realized an unmedicated birth not what I want. I am so inspired when I read the birth stories of friends and women who have done it, and I hear so many encouraging words that I too should do it, but it's just not what I want for me. If I tried it it wouldn't be wholeheartedly and with something like that I HAVE to go into it wholeheartedly... Go big or go home. And for me... I'm ending that game a little early. Of course if our training in Lamaze and/or hypnobirthing helps and the pain is tolerable, I won't get an unnecessary epidural, but I'm NOT afraid to get one either. I've read the risks... And I'm willing to take them (don't judge).

So... Then came the question of a doula again. Most often you seem them helping in the case of natural labors. I'm going into it knowing that's not that I want. Most of the doula's I read about are all there to support the woman and her decisions (they aren't medical doctors or midwives and don't deliver babies) but most of the bios I read are tailored towards homebirth, birth centers, or natural births. After finding a few doulas who make it pass your initial paper screening, you're suppose to set up interview and find the perfect match. Looking at my "free list" is a little daunting, looking at my "will charge me" list is intimidating because I don't want to waste my time if we decide not to do it.

Right now I'm thinking two things but I'm leaning towards the second:
1. Interview one or two doula's with my husband. Pre-screen her before couple interview and prep her about my husband's non-eagerness to have one beforehand, make sure she pumps up her services in front of him, and make sure her prices is low enough so hubby is more likely to agree. Also, make sure she's VERY husband friendly and puts a lot of responsibility on him so he doesn't feel replaced. Find a doula I like who is pro-epidural and preferably someone I/we meet in a childbirth class that maybe we're more acquainted with and it's not a "cold call"... Some arranging may need to be done to complete this task.

2. Find Lamaze ($20 and up) and/or Hypnobabies ($150)/ hypnobirthing ($300) classes, courses and materials around here and study up together... Make the next 6.5 months of our pregnancy about preparing for the next best day of our lives and live up the fact that we're doing it "alone." If we crash and burn... I can always say "I told you so" and we'll hire a doula next time.

So, like I said I'm leaning towards #2 but I can still be persuaded. I'm so excited for the day Spawnie arrives and I'd love to have the epidural work right, a dim-lit room, and us hand in hand as I push the baby out of my vajayjay. That's my dream as of now (it's changed a few times) but I also understand things can change any time. I know passionate people who plan elaborate births and have things change... In fact, plans change for a LOT of people. But as of now, this is a blueprint for some of my plans, and I hope to follow through, and end up with a fun birth experience, and most of importantly to me, a healthy little mini-us!

As far as postpardum doula's go, I think we'll be good in that department with our moms and my lactation consultant I get to hire thanks to my awesome insurance!

Now, tell me! Did you have a doula? Why or why not? Was your husband supportive? Why or why not? I know A LOT of doula advocates but I'd love to hear from both sides! And for a quick visual, vote in my poll below!

Staying Organized While Pregnant: Prego Planner LIVE Giveaway!

I'm a sucker for anything pregnancy related right now. Yes, I'm a marketer's dream! Pregnancy pillows, belly bands, I'm looking for it all! I'm also in love with everything baby right now though I just can't wait to try it on Spawnie.

Most times it hasn't really sunk in that I'm REALLY having a baby. I still can't wrap my head around the concept. I sorta feel like I'm playing house and we're just pretending. I'm usually most eager for my next doctor's appointment, but I feel bad cause when that day finally arrives I'm usually forgetting my questions.

I love keeping a record of things and I LOVE to write things down. Hence my blog... But I also have a baby journal, a regular journal, and a little notebook I keep in my purse to jot down thoughts throughout the day.

Putting my need to stay organized, write things down, and my love for pregnancy products all into one. Heather Patterson told me about the Prego Planner, your ultimate pregnancy organizer and offered to send me one and I literally squealed when I got it. See... There's this thing called Prego Brain... I didn't believe it when people first told me about it but now I have a TESTIMONY of it! This will help save you from it's wrath!
There's so much in this planner! A place for info about your OB or Midwife, a place for your updates at each checkup with spots for every measurement they take! Lists for a new baby!.. Oh it's so fun. Here's most of the features:
  • 12-month undated calendar
  • Pages to hold critical information such as OBGYN/Midwife contact information, hospital information, insurance information, pharmacy information, test results, questions for the physician and a chart to assist in keeping track of monthly progress
  • Interview questions for potential pediatricians
  • The ultimate nursery checklist to assist with registering for baby showers and keeping track of what items have been fulfilled and what hasn’t
  • An essential "acts of kindness" and gift log
  • A unique checklist of things to do before baby arrives
  • An area for the birth plan
  • A hospital packing list for Mom, Dad and Baby
  • Family and friends call list
  • Post delivery checklist
  • Space for postpartum visit questions
  • A handy pocket for paperwork
  • Coated and sturdy tabs that make the desired pages readily available
  • Easily interchangeable pages... and much more
I've already filled out my calendar and have Spawnie's due date marked along with my weekly milestones.
I love that pages can easily be removed if you don't need it, or rearranged easily because it's put together in a three ring binder. It easily fits in my purse and you'd better believe it's at every doctor's visit with me!

A lot of you I know will love that there's also a place for my birth plan! Can't wait to fill those pages out (there's several)! And like I mentioned before, there's several checklists for your newborn as well as for your hospital bag.
Being a first time mom I think it has really been so helpful in having a place for everything I may want to ask, or want to make note of. And it keeps me incredibly organized. I said I like to write things down but I didn't say I was organized... This keeps me that way!

So far this has been one of my FAVORITE pregnancy items (along with Bellybars and potatoes) and I think it's one of those things any newly preggo should add to their list of "must haves."

If you're not into the Chocolate style kind that I have, there's also Zebra, and Dressy.

Another great feature... It's not expensive. The Prego Planner is only $24.

A Year of Changes Between Christmases

This time last year... Christmas time... I was whining about feeling left behind... So many of my friends were having their second child and we hadn't started working on our first. I was so unsure when, or if I'd ever have that gut feeling of "now's the right time to reproduce" or if I'd have to blindfold myself and just jump before I knew if I was really ready. I wasn't sure if I had missed my cue somewhere between college and career. Or if maybe I just wasn't build with that motherly instinct to know when it's time.

A year later, I'm 14 weeks pregnant with our first child. My husband and I went from hardly mentioning children in our near future to on our anniversary a couple of days ago, planning for our second (and most likely final) child in our 5-year goals. Second. Child? I didn't bring it up but I decided to just focus on the one cooking as to not give myself a heart attack.

It's crazy how much can change in a year. In 2004 I went from single and loving it, and married for 6 months in a one year span.

But one thing that hasn't changed... My love for my faith, my family, and my friends. I am so grateful to have the knowledge I have and for the gospel and my church. There's no way I'd be where I am today if it wasn't for all of the things I've learned along the way. I'm grateful for Christ, who's birthday we're celebrating and love learning more about Him each day.

I can't wait to teach Spawnie all that I know and more.

This year is our last Christmas with Snoop as our only child. While sometimes I'm freaking scared out of my mind, other times I'm thinking "bring it on." I can't wait to have my little infant to cuddle with along with my furball next year.
Merry Christmas!

5 Years Down, an Eternity to Go

Exactly five and a half years ago I met the love of my life. I didn't know it then, but he was my future husband.
-June 2004: First date, and first time we met. I thought he was a hottie but had big eyes and was a little shy.
-2 dates later: First kiss, he's not so shy after all, I can't believe I let him kiss me.
-A week after that: We said "I love you."
-A couple days following: We talked about marriage planned it to be 2 years from then.
-Two months later: He goes away to college 3 and a half hours away. We are sad, but see eachother every weekend.
-A month later: We realized long distance SUCKS and decide to move up the wedding to that year.
-October 2004: We get engaged.
-December 2004: We're married exactly 6 months from the day we met.

Things I remember about my wedding day
I remember waking up at an absurd hour because we had to be at the temple about 5 hours early
I remember being tired from staying up late writing in my journal the night before.
I remember taking a shower and thinking I'd better get extra clean.
I remember wondering what our wedding ceremony would be like.
I remember NOT wanting to drive my car up to Salt Lake cause I had just been in an accident and the hood was bent.
I remember seeing my soon-to-be husband right before we walked in our sealing room and thinking "I love you."
I remember not saying "Yes/I do" when I was suppose to, and people thinking I was bailing out.
I remember shaking a little as we exchanged rings.
I remember being so happy walking hand and hand outside of the temple right after we were sealed, and thinking my husband was the most gorgeous man on Earth.
I remember snow on the ground and people shivering, but it was the one day I didn't complain about the cold, I wanted good pictures.
I remember driving back from the temple and thinking "wow, we're married"
I remember my dad being the first person to use the term "your husband" and being weirded out.
I remember downing about three cans of redbull before and during our reception to stay awake.
I remember wondering why we had to stand in a line.
I remember my wedding day being the best day to date, and the first day of the rest of my life.
Like we planned, 5 years later we're expecting our first baby, which is due to be born exactly six years (and two days) from the day we met. Boy we've come a long way!

Since getting married
-We went on a cruise to Mexico for our honeymoon.
-We were poor, our dining-room set was a cardboard box and two camping fold-out chairs we got as a wedding present.
-We arranged our schedules so we took four classes together.
-We got a new (to us) Kitchen set from my husband's grandparents.
-We moved 7 times
-We cleaned toilets together as early morning (4am) custodians and fought over the iPod.
-We bought our first home.
-We spent two summers apart for work.
-We adopted Snoop.
-We moved again.
-We went on a cruise to the Caribbean.
-We started, switched and started new careers.
-We created Spawnie.
-We stayed madly in love with each other.
He's been the most supportive, most forgiving, most loving husband in the world. He's my best friend, a great husband, and he's going to be a wonderful daddy.

I love you baby, and can't wait to see what the next 5(,000,000) years hold!

13 Weeks and Counting

I can't believe so much time has gone by! Week 13 has been good to me so far. I'll be 14 weeks Friday and I'm feeling much better than I had been feeling the past month. I'm not as sleepy and not as nauseous. Certain foods still don't sit well with me during certain times and I still love potatoes and grapes (not together) more than anything. I have a few friends who told me they had ultrasounds around 12-13 weeks and could tell if they were having a boy or girl then. I'm DYING to go get a special 3D Ultrasound so we can tell what we're having but my husband is much more patient than I am, and says he can wait another 7 weeks... *sigh*.

Since I'm getting into my 2nd trimester I wrote my final post on my Conceive blog... You can read it here. It was so fun writing about my pre-pregnancy journey and some of my research.

I also wrote my first post for Modern Day Mom. They're going to be following my whole pregnancy and helping me through it! They have experts to talk with me about nutrition, fitness, financial planning and more! We'll also suppose to have fun contests where you help me pick out stuff for Spawnie and win things for your little one too!

Of course I'll keep blogging here, I actually have a whole lineup of fun giveaways too that I'll be doing throughout my pregnancy. I get quite a few request sometimes to write about different products related to children and/or pregnancy so I'm choosing my favorites to feature through my next 27 weeks! I'm not going to forget about all of my future mama friends either! They'll be plenty of stuff you can save, and fertility stuff too to help along the way!
Ok, so on to what Spawnie's looking like at 13 weeks:
-Fingerprints have formed on Spawnie's tiny fingertips
-My baby's veins and organs are clearly visible through his/her still-thin skin
-Finally, Spawnie's body is starting to catch up with her head — which makes up just a third of its body size now.
-If Spawnie is a girl, she now has more than 2 million eggs in her ovaries.
-Spawnie is almost 3 inches long and weighs nearly an ounce.
Going on with Mommy:
-According to Baby Center, this is the last week of first trimester, and my risk of miscarriage is now much lower than earlier in pregnancy.
-Next week marks the beginning of my second trimester, a time of relative comfort for many women who see early pregnancy symptoms such as morning sickness and fatigue subside.
-More good news: Many couples also notice a distinct libido lift around this time (thank goodness cause I'll be honest, my friend Libby has been on 3 month vacation along with my Aunt Flow)
-My breasts may have already started making colostrum, the nutrient-rich fluid that will feed Spawnie for the first few days after birth, before my milk starts to flow.
-I'm noticing more round ligament pain as my uterus grows and expands. It's especially painful when I sneeze.

My stomach feels fattier. I had a chat with an RN today through my company's maternity benefits program and she answered a lot of my questions. I'm suppose to gain about 25-35 pounds through my pregnancy. I gained a pound and a half my first two months then went down to where I started at 12 weeks. We'll see where I'm at next time! I'm about 140lbs, so by the end of my pregnancy I may be about 175... That's the biggest I've ever been! Yikes!!

Oh, and any ideas of how to decorate a little tummy like mine for Christmas or the holidays? I'm entering a photo contest and need ideas! Mine may not be as big as some of the others so I've gotta be creative! I'm thinking of wearing this shirt @NanceAttack made for me and taking it next month if my tummy gets bigger by then.

Oh,and PS, question of the day: Did you have a doula? Why or why not? I'm debating getting one. I'll post my dilemma later this week but I'd love to know your quick thoughts for now as I sort through some of mine!

Baby Shopping List

Ok so I've been wondering what I'm going to need when this baby gets here. I know some friends in college told me love would be enough.. Love, some clothes and diapers I guess. But yea, I've gotta get real. I waited awhile to be ready to have a baby so I could hopefully afford more than the essentials. But since I'm more than three months pregnant now I figured it was about time to get real, buckle down and see what I'm REALLY going to need.

I have a Prego Planner and it ROCKS! I'm going to be giving you a full review on it soon so I won't spoil it all now, but it's really helped me stay organized with this pregnancy and all of the information I need to know and/or remember.

One of the many many things it has which I LOVE is a Newborn Checklist. And it lists all of the things I may need for the first few months of Spawnie's life. Yes, it's daunting at first, but that's ok. I've got a long way to go. All of these things aren't total necessities, but it gives me an idea of what I may need. I'm sure I'll get a lot used/recycled, and as gifts, but it's an encompassing list of what I may want to end up with.

Anything you think I don't need or that I forgot on the list?

My Parazul Diaper Bag and a Handbag Giveaway

I know it sounds vain but a cute diaper bag was one thing I wanted to splurge on. Everyone told me not to because it's just going to get popped, peed, milk, and all sorts of crap on it... And I get it. I really do. But to me a diaper bag is kind of like a mother's right to feel like a classy woman... Amongst all of the crap (literally).

The problem is my husband doesn't always agree with my reasoning, he's more of a "practical" kind of guy aka B.O.R.I.N.G. So I tried to find a compromise. I won a $150 gift card from Pottery Barn Kids. I found an ADORABLE diaper bag for about $120. The only problem... It was white. The brown one was about $180. So... Do I splurge on the extra $30? Why not?

I didn't want to jump at the opportunity quite yet because there were so many other things at that store I could use my gift card for. I decided to wait it out... And good thing I did!

Parazul
contacted me about their beautiful designer purses. Oh how I've dreamed of one day owning a designer purse... I didn't even care it was bought it in the way back of one of those stores in New York... Whatever! So Parazul was another designer label I had to add to my wish list.

Originally I was going to do a giveaway of one of their Classic Bag purses but when I opened the box of my review item and saw what was inside I gasped! Oh, it was one of their bags alright... Their gorgeous pink scarf bag actually. But what did this giant bag translate to for me? That's right... DIAPER BAG!What I love: It's versatile as in it can be used as an all day bag, a briefcase or... My favorite: Stylish diaper bag.

I decided to model it for you so you could get the full effect. The silk scarf I thought was a nice touch. My husband said it'll be great if Spawnie isn't a boy but I corrected him... Boy or girl this pink bag is still going to work! The main large portion of the bag is made with modern canvas so it's easy to wipe off and clean, and the inside is lined with a beautiful bright blue. Lots of room for diapers, bottles, and whatever else I decide to put in there... Toys, food, a small child, it'll all fit! Now, my personal downside: While it's beautiful, apparently durable, and easy to clean, it is a lot of money for something that will probably get poop on it. I worry I'm going to be very protective of it and most likely get a cheaper diaper bag as a back up and use the nice one for special occasions.
While this bag retails for $350 it's a HUGE step up from the bag I was looking at from PBK, and getting another designer tote from someplace like Louis Vuitton is going to cost you about $1000 and up! So if you're into designer bags for a better price, check Parazul: An exciting new line of handbags and accessories out!

Now you didn't think I was going to leave you hanging right? I can't just brag about my new fancy diaper bag and not offer something for you!

You can BUY Parazul: They're giving my readers a 30% discount from their ENTIRE site! And they have products from designer handbags, to scarfs, wallets, clutches and charms. Use code: PARAZULPERK005.And/or Win one! *muah*: A Parazul Classic Bag. Retail: $250.

The lovely Parazul Classic Bag is named for its classic shape that will never be out of fashion. It's just the right size to carry everything you need in simple, yet elegant, style. You'll find the Classic Bag complements all of the outfits in your wardrobe.

The Beige Classic Bag comes with the 100% silk Beige/black logo slim scarf as well as the Parazul logo charm (as shown). Be sure to view the complete collection of scarves and charms, as these items are the key to changing the look of your Parazul bag in a flash!

The handbag's body material is a modern coated canvas, making it durable and easy to care for. The natural-color leather trim provides a classic look. The interior signature blue lining is sure to bring a smile to your face whenever you open your bag!

Pregnancy at 11 and 12 Weeks

So I got behind. I figured I'd better update this now cause before we know it I'll be 40 weeks and ready to pop. ... Ok maybe not that quickly, but it seems that way for some people.

I'm on my 13th week now, I'll be 13 weeks Friday but I need to explain how the last two weeks have been cause I can't post about 13 before writing about 11 or 12 now can I?

So at week 11..
-I was still pretty tired
-feeling but not looking as fat
-still have my crazy cravings for potatoes
Spawnie:
-Tiny tooth buds are beginning to appear under Spawnie's gums
-Some bones are beginning to harden.
-Spawnie is already busy kicking and stretching, but I won't feel it for another month or two.
-Nor will I notice the hiccuping that may be happening now that Spawnie's diaphragm is forming.

At 12 weeks..
Friday, I celebrated 12 weeks of pregnant in the bathroom hurling up my dinner. My mom said she was sick more during her second trimester so I was worried that was the beginning of mine. Thankfully I've felt good since that night.
-I'm not as tired lately and seem to be able to make it through the day without a nap.
-I'm eating more and craving more than just potatoes now.
-My six pack make a return today. I'm not sure where my belly went but I'm hoping it makes a return soon. So far my 9 week picture was the biggest so far.
Spawnie:
-Fingers will soon begin to open and close, his/her toes will curl,
-Spawnie's eye muscles will clench, and mouth will make sucking movements.
-Spawnie's intestines are protruding out near the umbilical cord but will soon all end up in his/her stomach cavity.
-His/her face looks more human now, the eyes are in front, and ears are in place to the side... Thankfully my Spawnie won't look like Alien Spawn forever.
-Spawnie is now about 2 inches long.

Babycenter also says if I prod my abdomen, Spawnie will squirm in response. We noticed this today at my OB appointment.

First off, when the doctor went to put the dopplar to my belly I lifted up my shirt above my belly button thinking it was up there but it was actually a lot lower and I couldn't help but laugh at myself.

We were listening for Spawnie's heartbeat and I got worried after a few moments when the doctor couldn't find it. I was telling myself to remain calm but I just kept thinking of the scene on Marly and Me (sorry if you haven't seen it)! She (my OB) was moving over to the left side of my belly when I heard a soft WOOSH WOOSH WOOSH... Really fast, and I recognized the sound cause I'd listened to it before on my friend's blog.

I had my iPhone ready to record but Spawnie kept moving around and turning so we'd keep hearing WOOSH WOOSH CRSKSDK, and my said OB Spawnie was moving around and that's what the noise was. I drank OJ before cause some people told me it gets the baby to move around, I wasn't sure if we'd get an ultrasound and I wanted to see baby move it so, but guess that's not the best idea for a dopplar check. I was too happy and excited to remember to take my phone out too, so no recording this time, but I'll remember at my next appointment in 4 weeks.

Spawnie's heart rate was strong and in the 160s, I think I heard her say 166. So... What do you think? Boy or girl? Don't forget to vote in the poll at the top!

Also, one lesson I've learned is belly size can go up and down! I'm not sure when mine will stick around but I'm hoping it decides to show up and stick around awhile... Might as well.

Did your belly size go up and down? When did you notice it pop out for sure?

Breastfeeding: A Preggos Thoughts

So I've spent a couple of days swooning over fancy baby bedding, I guess it's time to get serious.

I wrote a guest post about breastfeeding for Blacktating and I guess it was just want I needed to motivate me to research, and think more about the topic.

First, there's choices, plans, decisions. I've thought a lot about breastfeeding not just since I've been thinking about having children and since being pregnant, but during my marriage. I don't remember how it came up but my husband had insisted I breastfeed. His thinking wasn't even on affordability but on health.

Now, my mind changes on a lot of things... A year and a half ago I wrote out my master plan for vacations for the next 5 years... An African safari being the big SHABANG in something like 2013. Well, needless to say, plans have changed. So I imagine my thoughts on breastfeeding will also continue to evolve as I continue my research throughout pregnancy, and of course once Spawnie gets here.

Since I am a journalist, I'm very into research. But I don't like just throwing things out there or taking people's word for it. So while I ask for recommendations, know I'm fact checking everything you tell me. I'm going to try to do my best to back up facts I learn with links and sources!

I sat down at my computer and for five solid hours I looked up information on breastfeeding pumps, looking into how long women should breastfeed, how to prepare for breastfeeding, and just thought a lot about how it would work for me. I spoke with a lactation consultant at my local hospital I'll be delivering at and was given a few tips. She first asked me how old my baby was...
"Umm, I'm a little early," I told her.
"Oh, you're still pregnant!" I heard her smiling through the phone.
"Yea I'm just trying to be prepared."
"Ok, when are you due?"
"Umm.. June." I left out the part about it being the END of June.

I was worried she'd hang up on me or tell me to call back in a few months but she was nice and gave me information about classes for about $20 a couple. She recommended we take it at about 35 weeks. She also told me they don't recommend I start pumping for 2-4 weeks after birth. I also asked about rental pump prices, and theirs are $75/month.

I also called my insurance and found out they give $500 a year towards lactation consultants. Which is nice perk. Sure, I may have one for free after birth for a little while, but $500 towards one who can help me at home is a nice addition.

Someone referred me to my local La Leche League so I called them to get information on any pump rentals they may offer. I also may drop by for a meeting or two in the next few months to see what it's all about. I hear the support groups are great.

I got caught up on the pump topic for quite some time. I'm going to go back to work after about 3 months and I'd like to continue to breastfeed. Since the rental cost is so much I figure buying is a better option after 3 months.

On Twitter, most of my mother followers recommended either Medela or Ameda. Medela had an OVERWHELMING number of favorites, but a few people who I HIGHLY respect when it comes to breastfeeding recommended Ameda. I looked into the different systems... And comparable products.

I used a few sites to do side-by-side comparisons to the brands to see which one I'd like more. Medela has been the "Most trusted brand in breast pumps for 20 years!" and Ameda has great reviews.

What were things I looked at? Well, I know I can't judge this by looking at it but comfort was one thing. Finding a pump that's adjustable is the way to go so I'm more likely to find a level that works for me. Type of pump was another thing I looked at. The idea of a hand pump doesn't appeal to me. Durability is important, because if I'm shelling out the dough, I'd like it to last for more than one kid.

I also looked at portability, I need something that will be able to travel well. Power options, car adapters, AC adapters and battery operated were all important to me. I would like a dual pump system, so I can pump both boobs if need be. Motor noise level is something I won't personally know until using it but I've read reviews of some being quieter than others. Effectiveness is also obviously an issue but I've read the closer the pumps cycling speed is to mimicking my baby, the better it'll be. So options on speed will be important.

So I narrowed it down based on recommendation and my research.

Ameda Purely Yours® Breast Pump with Carry All
Motor Specifications:
Cycles:
Single: 30-60 cycles per minute (8 suction settings)
Double: same less 10%

Pressure:
Single: 100-275 mm Hg
Double: 50-200 mm Hg

It's $199 on Ameda's site and about $195 on Amazon. Right now it's also $199 Buy it Now new on eBay too. It weighs about 6.5 lbs. It can use different types of bottles jut not the wide mouth kind.

I've read since it comes with a hygienic kit, and it's closed pump system makes it easy to clean and more hygienic. This one doesn't have as many reviews on Amazon, but it has a bunch, and better ones on the Breast Pumps Direct website. It's also FDA approved unlike the one below.

Pump In Style® Advanced Breastpump Backpack
Suction: 44-62 times per minute (2 phase pumping)
VACUUM: 50-250 MM HG
POWER: 60 HZ

I've read this one mimics a baby's sucking motions by staring fast then slowing down.

It is about $299 or $260 on breast pumps direct it's $274 on Amazon and $221 new in box in eBay.

It uses a closed pump system so some people say it's harder to clean, and you have to work a harder to make sure it's clean enough and rid of possible mold that could build up in the motor area.

Looking more into the open/closed systems I read that many open systems are good because they allow more direct suction. Many now also have filters to make any air that seeps through the tubes not contaminate the milk.

I have to admit when I first looked at the cost I was thinking I'd try to breastfeed for the first 12 weeks, and go to formula... 12 weeks is better than zero right? And why spend so much money on a pump I may not be able to use? Or won't use? Or that won't work for a long time for me. But then... HELLO! Formula isn't cheap either! I asked the parents of the kid I babysit how much they pay and they say in the beginning it was close to $400 a month. Each can is $15-25 dollars and now... At 11 months he still drinks about 1 can a week. Obviously I'd pay for the cost of the pump pretty quickly.

So now... My worries and things I still want to learn:
-Ways to pump as much as I can while I'm on leave and save it for when I go back to work
-Ways to pump at work when I don't have a private office or much time to do so
-How to store milk best, and foods, herbs, things that can help with milk supply
-How my husband can be involved in feedings at night so we can alternate if we choose to

My biggest worry of them all is really doing it while working. My job is very demanding and I'm not sitting at a desk or office all day. I usually don't have time for lunch much less pumping breaks! I work 9-10 hour shifts and I'm usually either driving, filming, writing or editing... None of those are in private.

I know breast is best but to be honest the biggest thing keeping me from wanting to do for up to a year is the cost of formula. Either way.. Breast milk or formula, kids usually don't drink whole cow milk until they're a year old (please correct me if I'm wrong, I'd love to know otherwise). So I figure the longer I keep it coming the more we'll save. I imagine with my schedule and lifestyle we will have to do a mix after awhile, and I'm totally ok with that.

My husband and I initially thought pumps were pricey but after looking at the cost of formula we're hoping to invest in one and figure out how to make it work for us. He also wants to be able to help at night, whether that means bringing the baby to me, or feeding from a bottle some that's ok. Spawnie would obviously have to be bottle fed while I'm at work. If I automatically wake up at night to feed all of the time, great, but we're hoping to take turns if possible.

So... That's a LOT of information. But I'm glad I have it down. It's kind of a "starting point" I guess you could say. And I'll revisit the topic throughout my pregnancy. I already have a breastfeeding DVD to review, some boob cream to help with breastfeeding, as well as herbal tea and some boob leak pads. I even just won a feeding cover. So there will be MANY MORE post on this topic in the future!

If you made it this far CONGRATULATIONS! I'd love your advice and referrals on breast pumps, and any tips you may have on the questions I have above especially, or any other random advice you have on the topic! All I ask is you are respectful to my views, and the views of other people who may comment! In other words.. Be nice!

A Girl Can Dream, Can't She?

So yesterday I shared bedding I love. Today I showed them to my husband, he loved the price. Especially the $50 9 piece frog set I love if Spawnie is a boy.

But I wasn't totally IN LOVE with any girl sets. They were all OK, and cute, but nothing was IT... You know, popping out the moment it's spotted knowing it's THE ONE... Like a wedding dress. Yes, I know I sound slightly insane for comparing my child's nursery decor to my wedding dress. And maybe I am... Insane that is. If you don't think so now, you will once you see the bedding I've decided is PERFECT for a daughter... One I would DIE to have if Spawnie is a girl. One my husband would actually KILL me for buying if she is (so yes, are we clear? I would be dead). Just look at this:
**dies**

One of my sinful wonderful Twitter friends was so kind to send me a link to a simple Myspace page... A page that was so glorious I actually signed into my ancient Myspace account just to see more pictures... And fall more in love. I was taking suggestions from friends and simultaneously grateful and depressed that she introduced me to this work at home designer.

My eyes watered. I'd never seen any little girl bedding so beautiful in all of my years (yes years) of searching. Hunting nursery designs have been a secret hobby of mine since before I was even thinking about children!
The bows, the ruffles, the mix match designs! It's PERFECT!

I wanted to cry because I knew it was going to be expensive... Something out of my reach. I wanted to cry because I knew I'd be disappointed once I realized I couldn't afford it, and that any bedding I chose after setting my eyes on this would be settling. I wanted to cry because I couldn't believe I was seriously freaking out about baby bedding right now... Ok I could.I may be one of the biggest girlie girls you'll ever meet, and these designs were the epitome of girlie. By the way, all of these are by Love Bug Baby Bedding.

I know there are so many more important things I will buy for Spawnie, and some would argue it's selfish of me to look at such glamorous bedding that will get peed, pooped and barfed on... But I would be lying if I said I cared. The ONE thing I REALLY want to splurge on is bedroom decor. I'm not too proud to buy a used high chair, dresser, clothes, books, toys, or whatever else we may need... Heck, I'd buy a used set like this in a SECOND if I could find one. I'm eyeballing my prized possessions wondering how much I could salvage for them. Selling Snoop even popped into my mind... But only for a second (don't tell him I said that)! Ready for my excuse to splurge? Well, I got a crib for free, so that saved like $400! I could use that $400 to pay for (part of) this! Look at all the adorable matching stuff!! **dies**

No no, that free crib argument is not convincing enough, my husband won't go for that. I must work hard to think of a master plan so I won't die... And so my husband won't kill me. But until then. I'll keep dreaming, and hope that most of you are right in that Spawnie is a boy so I can buy the $50 frog set I LOVE for a little boy, and pack my dreams of a pink princess room away until I get a promotion or two.

**PS: (Added an hour later) I JUST found these on Ebay by babyloom! Similar and HALF the price!! Hubby still laughed at me, but we're getting closer!**

Adorable Baby Bedding Sets

I have been too exhausted to do anything but browse the Internet. I haven't been visiting or commenting on blogs... Or writing in my own for that matter. I've been one big fat blog slacker. Oh but I have an excuse... (Not that I really need one, but I kind of do so I don't feel so bad) I've been SICK. Oh yes, and it's weird being sick while being pregnant cause I'm not sure if I'm puking cause of morning sickness or cause of a stomach bug.

For the amount of puke I've witnessed spewing from my mouth I'm guessing it's a stomach bug. I was worried I'd puke Spawnie up with my dinner. Then I woke up sweating like crazy, then the next moment I was freezing. I should have taken my temperature but I haven't gotten around to it yet. I imagine it's not too bad, and I'm trying to stay hydrated. I hit 12 weeks on Friday... A milestone which now means I have around a 2% chance of miscarriage. Can I get a big WOOP!!?

We have another appointment on Tuesday and they'll check to hear Spawnie's heart beat for the first time. I can't wait! And I hope all it well. I think after this next appointment I'll be able to let out a huge sigh of relief, make an official announcement at my job, etc. I'm just praying it all goes well.

In order to calm my nerves about all of the ickyness I'm feeling I started shopping around for crib bedding I like. I first checked out Etsy and saw a few adorable designs for 4pc sets for under $200. With the skirt, blanket, sheets, bumper or whatever. But then a few friends on Twitter turned me on to JoJo Designs. I guess the are good-quality for a great price. Now I'm pretty much obsessed! I found a bunch of brand new 9 piece sets on eBay for $50.

I know some people say they won't use it/ care/ etc. But I've been waiting to decorate a nursery like my whole life, so I'm gonna enjoy this! We won't paint the room or anything so the lamps, diaper stackers, and decorations will have to add the full effect. We also have a queen bed in that room too, but it just has a white down comforter, so I need to try to get something that doesn't clash with that.

Here's what I love for if Spawnie is a boy (which apparently, most of you think it is):This one is by Jo Jo designs and it's in a 9pc set for a great price! It's my favorite I think. I think frogs are so cute for little boys.
Since a lion is my favorite animal I fell in love with this. It's by Kidsline. The 4pc set is $99.
Penguins are my second favorite animal. A friend showed me this design and I think it's so cute! This is by Cottontail Designs and it's $100-$150 depending where you buy (Amazon is cheaper!)

Now for the girl designs I love! I must say I still am not TOTALLY sold on any of these like I am the frog one, but they are all pretty and very different from each other! I'm not as big on animals and teddy bears for little girls as I am for boys. All of these are JoJo Designs.
I like the bumblebee cause it's simple and classy. But I'm feeling it's lacking pink (my favorite color)! I love love this one!! It's so different and I could just picture my little princess surrounded by this. While it's original, once again, it's lacking pink! I do love that it could grow with a toddler and kid though. This design reminds me of the way I decorated my bedroom when I was a teenager... To the T! And I STILL love it! I love that it's girlie yet somehow a little chic at the same time.
This rose design I think is cute and classy, but I wonder if it's too plain. I think it's really pretty though and fit for a little princess!

And because a couple of commenter mentioned Target and Walmart I decided to add a few designs I like from those stores too!
Target:
And once again I find the frogs I like. Then Walmart:And last but not least:
So what do you think? Which one of these is your favorite? (spare me bumper debates!) Have other nursery or bedding designers you like? Please share. I'm all for affordable but if you know of a great one that's on the pricey side still let me know, and maybe I'll win the lotto between now and then!
