A full night's rest--Are you jealous? Don't be just yet

It happened. Something miraculous. I had my first full night of sleep and I couldn't believe it. Yes, after five months, my daughter slept longer than she ever has through the night. Four blissful hours, followed by five minutes of nursing followed by... Wait for it... SEVEN hours of sleep. I couldn't believe it. And do you know how it was done? I GOT THE HECK OUT OF HER ROOM!

Ladies and gentlemen, this is how it's done. At least for my daughter, this was key for both of us.

I'd been telling my husband we should sleep in our room for months now. But his lack of eagerness to move made me in no rush to move, and so we stayed in the guest bed (which is much more comfortable than our own if I might add) in the nursery.

The night our daughter tried rice cereal for the first time I figured would be a good night to start sleeping in our room again. Just do it cold turkey. Like ripping a band aid off.

I'm not sure what I was so afraid of. She'd been sleeping in her crib for a couple of months now on her soybean mattress. Why does that matter? Well, before having my daughter I researched mattresses like a mad woman paranoid about SIDS, and found one I liked. It's more durable than traditional foam mattresses and uses renewable sources instead of crud oil, it keeps her warm in the winter and cool in the summer, and a bunch of other benefits.

Anyway, as usual she went to bed at 9pm. I put her in her cozy little long sleeved jammies and her Baby Sleep Bag to keep her warm--Or cool, whatever she needs cause it's supposed to regulate her temperature. I passed out shortly after but we crashed in our room for the first time without her since she's been born. I kept her monitor near my head but had it turned down pretty low. Which sorta explains why my husband woke me up at 1am saying Lil' J was crying. I couldn't believe he heard her before me and for some weird reason I felt a little guilty.
I fed her then put her back to bed. She woke up again at about 4:30 to eat and quickly fell back asleep. She didn't wake up again until the sun was up at 7am, and by then I was ready to snuggle with her so I did, and rested with her before I had to get ready for work. Waking up just twice in a night was really good for her.

The next night I had her monitor up louder so I heard her when she woke up at 1am. She whined a little when I put her back down but I patted her bottom for a few moments and she was back asleep. I woke up at 4:30 hearing her laugh in her sleep. I realized had I heard that when we were in her room I probably would have sat up to feed her. I dozed back off.

I woke up again at five wondering if I slept through her cries. I dozed back off.

I woke up again just before 7am to use the restroom and couldn't believe she wasn't awake yet. She had slept six hours straight for the first time in months. I felt fully rested so I decided to pump a little while I waited for her to wake up.

An hour and a half later she finally called to me to come and get her. My daughter slept seven and a half hours in a row! She went to bed at 9pm and woke up for the day at 8:30am.

HALLEFREAKINLUJAH. Was her sleep bag actually keeping her asleep? That's what it says on the box! It says babies wake up a lot cause they get too hot or cold and the natural fibers (merino wool) it's made of keeps her cozy. Or was it because we were out of her room? Who cares?! I got sleep!

I picked her up, snuggled and nursed her for quite awhile and told her repeatedly how much I loved her. She smiled, looked so refreshed, and so did I.

The world seemed a little brighter that day and has as she's slept stretches of 6-10 hours. Yes 10 hours. I didn't know that was possible. Houston, we've had a breakthrough, and it ROCKS! ...Or at least it did while it lasted.

Yea, by ROCKS, I mean it rockED. Her new awesome sleep routine lasted, for several weeks. But this week it's been horrible again. Up every two hours! I'm wracking my brain trying to see what we're doing differently. Every night is a new experiment. We're still using the sleep bag, still not in her room, still using the same mattress. What's up with my crazy daughter? I haven't a clue! My husband and I always joke that maybe she's teething or having a growth spurt, because that's the excuse everyone gives when your baby is getting on your nerves.

So that's my guess. Another growth spurt. Or maybe her first little tooth is about to pop up. Just pray for me and that my baby who loves to sleep will return. I'm also going to try some Karma. Maybe doing a giveaway for a $260 crib mattress will bring good sleep Karma.

PS: Karma worked cause I wrote this post last night before bed and am waking up now, BEFORE my daughter who has been sleeping for more than 8 hours straight (yes I went and checked on her, she's still breathing)!! Yay!! So hopefully the following prize will help in bringing another mama some much needed rest!

It's a Sealy® Posturepedic™ Springfree® Soybean & Latex Foam-Core Crib Mattress. It's by the #1 baby mattress brand. There are no springs, so it's insanely light. It's eco-friendly (which everyone is obsessed with these days). The soybeans in the mattress were grown right here in the USA, which is cool I guess, but my favorite part about it--It's a 2-stage mattress! So one side is firm for her infant stage, and the other stage is a little softer for her toddler stage, so we won't need to buy another mattress for her for a while. They retail for $260 ($197 at Walmart).

Everyone who comments on this post before January 20th is entered. You can get ONE extra entry for letting me know another Kolcraft product you think looks pretty cool or if you are a blog follower of mine, or follow @Kolcraft on Twitter or Facebook and tell them you saw my giveaway. *Thanks Kolcraft and BabySleepBags.com for sending products to try so I could give an honest review about them and how I've used them.

  1. My son last night fell asleep for 10 hours too. For the last two weeks, he was waking up every hour and a half, it was driving me NUTS. So glad that the same thing happened for you. Hugs.

  2. Congratulations! Yes...I think it's safe to say I'm JEALOUS!

  3. i'm jealous! 10 months in and i haven't slept longer then 4 hours straight. my little one did for a few nights around the 4 months mark, and then back tracked and never slept so long again. it has definitely been a struggle that i pray will be over every night. eventually i guess.

  4. I'm so glad you are finally getting some sleep! Our 3 month old is a GREAT sleeper. He has slept at least 7 hours at a time since he was 5 weeks old. Now he generally sleeps 8-10 without waking up. We've had issues with his start time sometimes he is awake after his last feeding for two or more hours which means sometimes he isn't going to sleep til after 2 AM. Lately he's been going to sleep by 12 midnight and getting up between 830 and 10. The mattress sounds wonderful! We use a sleep bag as well and for now he is still sleeping in a "Moses basket" next to our bed but we'll be moving him soon.

  5. My daughter slept with my husband and me the first four months. I agonized about moving her into her own bed, but I resolved to make the change when she turned 4 months old. That day, I put her in her crib for her nap, and she did well, so I felt better. I laid her in her crib that night and sadly walked back to my room to go to bed . . . and didn't wake until 6:00 in the morning. The night I most worried about being separate and whether she would be able to sleep was the FIRST night she slept all the way through the night. All of us slept so much better, and I have never looked back, although I do, sometimes, miss snuggling with her in our bed.

  6. OMIGOODNESS! I clicked on the soybean link because my husband and I were just talking about trying to transition our 14 mo. old back to his crib, but he needs a better mattress if it's going to be successful (been sleeping on our plushy Sealy for months and months and months now). So, I would LOVE (as in ♥ ♥ ♥) to win one!!

Sleep issues are the number one worry after feeding issues, and it doesn't really get easier. Just different.

  7. We are only 4 weeks in, so it's safe to say that I am very jealous and it will be a long time until we sleep that much!!

  8. We just had a great night with 8 hours of sleep! This was baby girl's first long stretch of sleep - she's not yet 4 months. It was so strange waking up at 5am and not seeing her since 9pm! I am contemplating the Baby Sleep Bag too. Her Halo Sleepsacks seem to be working out okay though.

  9. And we have the Jeep 2 in 1 carrier that my husband likes to use!

  10. I love your blog! I've been reading since you were blogging on Parenting.com while pregnant with Lil' J. I truly hope that once I have my little girl, that she will be a good sleeper (and hopefully this mattress will help!) I'm also going to look into getting that sleep bag too! Please know that I devour every bit of info you post about. Soon I'll be making some hair bows for my little one like you did;)

  11. I sure hope when our little one is born that they are as adorable as Lil J :) Congrats on getting sleep!

  12. And I am a follower, thus comment #2 ^_^

  13. Hopefully the good sleeping habits continue! And if it's due to the mattress, sign me up :)

  14. That is amazing. My 17 month old didn't sleep more than 2 hrs at a time until he was like 15 months old. My 6 month old slept 6 hrs straight her first night alive. Of course they wake up at different times throughout the night so I never sleep. :)

    ReplyDelete
  15. I'm a little jealous. My 4 month old is out of our bed much earlier than the rest of them were. He wants to stretch out. But he's waking up twice a night. I'm hoping it gets a little easier for him soon. I need sleeeeep.

  18. I've been battling sleep too. And I have no idea what to do about it. She's five months now.. and I still don't feel okay putting her in her room across the house. its so far away. One day we'll have to, but not yet...

  19. I LOVE the Kolcraft Countours Bassinet. I wanted one so badly when I had her, i just couldn't justify the expense for jsut a few months. :(

    ReplyDelete
  20. Isn't sleep nice? And of course it seems like once you've figured it out, then it all gets messed up again for a while. Don't worry too much about what you're doing, or not doing, right or wrong. Lots of times it's just something going on with the baby.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I've been researching mattresses the past couple of weeks and would love to win this one! I hope the karma continues to work for you!

  22. Wow, thats so great to sleep through the night. My little one is now 7months and everytime we get to that state something comes up. The week before Christmas he ws sickly, come to find our he really was bringing in a tooth because as soon as is reared it's little head his "cold" went away. He does wakeup alot in the night but if he's not crying now, I leave him be. He's aroun that age that he can learn to put himself back to sleep if he's not hungry. (yes, i do get to him is he's sad, crying etc :) Right now, as I write this, hes laying in his crib from awaking and playing around. lol. I wish you the best of nights, but know, when they aren't great ones, you are so so not alone. Many hugs. and if you ever wanna chat again my email has changed to mccammons0906@yahoo.com from the galinbakersfield one.

  23. Oh and for an extra chance at that mattress, :) I would love to have the wonderbug activity center as my little one is a major mover now.

  24. You are one up on me. My daughter sleeps all night. But she does it in my bed. In my back, usually, or wrapped in my arms. She's two and a half now. She hasn't had her own room since she was born, so that's why she was with us. But since we built the room downstairs and freed up the upstairs one for her, we don't have that excuse anymore. I want my bed back, without a daughter in my back, but I think I'm going to be sad when she's not sleeping with me anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  25. we had the same problem... its good to just remember that they go through cycles, some better than others :)

  26. I've been following your blog for a bit now (on google reader). I just added you on facebook as well :) (I'm sure my friends and family are now convinced I'm pregnant ;))

  27. Yay for sleep! My poor sister-in-law has a 16 month old and she still doesn't get more than 5 hours at a time. Thanks for posting about your mattress! I'll definitely file that away in my "Stuff to know for future baby" file :D

    ReplyDelete
  28. Love the comment about how everyone uses growth spurts as an excuse for when you're baby's getting on your nerves! So true.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Congrats! Our baby girl is 8 months old and was sleeping through the night and then teething hit. She has 4 teeth now and we can see 4 more coming...poor baby. She usually wakes once during the night now, and I know from my son that they go through phases! Hope Lil' J keeps on sleeping for ya!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I'm a blog follower of yours! With 2 kids I don't get to read as many blogs as before but yours is one I read all the time! :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. I have never heard of that kind of mattress. It is true that the regular foam mattresses are cold, we use 2 extra sheets and a waterproof crib sheet to keep our mattress warmer for my little girl. It also helps with changing the mattress if she wets during the night. I hope the karma works for you!

    ReplyDelete
  32. for another chance to win the mattress, because it sounds so cool!
I'm a follower of your blog and we got the potty seat as a baby shower gift, of course we haven't yet used it since the little one is just 8 months old.

    ReplyDelete
  33. They do say that babies stop sleeping when they are learning something...talking, walking, crawling. I know that is exactly how it was for my little guy! Great giveaway by the way! =)

    ReplyDelete
  34. I am a follower of your blog! I have to tell you also, I had my baby sleep in his own room at 5 weeks and he slept through the night from then until he was 6 months old when he got really sick. That messed his sleeping up for a very long time. He slept better as a baby then he does now as a 2 year old!

    ReplyDelete
  35. YAY!!! I'm so excited for you! I'm sure your hubby is glad to ;-) lol!

  36. Oooh, I've never won anything and I would love this mattress! We're holding off buying one because I want an eco mattress but I don't want to pay the high-end prices (like everyone else in the world.)

    Pick me, pick me!

  39. I am expecting my first baby in 7 weeks, so I am trying to suck up all the sleep I can right now. I hope that Lil J keeps sleeping for you at night, it feels good to be refreshed and ready for the next day. I am also looking into getting some sleep sacks for my baby, I have heard a lot of good things about them.

  40. I like the look of the Jeep baby carriers from Kolcraft. I think I will be getting a carrier for my little one.

  41. Congrats on the sleep! My little girl is 9 months and has never slept through the night. :/ We are weaning to see if that will help. I am so ready for a good nights sleep!

  45. I would so love it if my daughter would sleep for 7 hours straight! She has never been a good sleeper at night thanks to her nurses in the NICU and so still at 17 months she will not sleep all night :(

    ReplyDelete
  46. I have had a Kolcraft bassinet with my last two children and just love it!

    ReplyDelete
  47. My 4 month old slept 8 hours straight (no feeding) on NYE. We came home from a wedding and just left her in her carseat. I got 6 hrs of sleep straight. Best. Night. Ever. I think about it every night before putting her to sleep in her crib. She's never slept more than 4 hrs straight in it. Lately, it's no more than 2. Sigh.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Sleep whats that? We haven't slept more than 7 hours a night since she was born, almost 1 year ago. Maybe this mattress is the key?

    ReplyDelete
  49. Woohooo!!! My daughter had a few months of rough rough sleeping and then she started sleeping 13 hours a night! Last night she was up twice (she's almost 11 months) and I feel like a zombie. blah.

  50. Also, I liked them on Facebook and told them about your giveaway.

  51. We are expecting our first in April and I am not looking forward to the lack of sleep. Anything that could maybe help increase the chances of her being a good sleeper I am willing to try!

    ReplyDelete
  52. I am also interested in the Jeep carrier and the wonderbug activity center...they look fun!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Our baby is in bed with us still at 6 months old. She wakes up a lot. We tried to transition her to the crib at 4 months with no luck. Maybe a better mattress would help with our second attempt.

    ReplyDelete
  54. When a baby sleeps through most of the night for the first time--it..is...AWESOME! Congrats :-)

  55. the jeep 2-in-1 carrier looks pretty cool

  56. After reading your post on controlled crying, I went for it with my 14 month old. We started a few days after Christmas. I couldn't take it anymore. I needed to sleep. The first few days were rough, but now he sleeps like a dream and he sleeps ALL NIGHT!!! We're both well rested. She might be waking up because she misses you. When I was co-sleeping and nursing, I kept one of his blankets between us so that my smell would be on it. He sleeps with it in his crib now. He actually holds onto it.

    ReplyDelete
  57. So glad you finally got rest! I bet things will be less stressful now!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Don't worry, it doesn't get much better! My almost 1 year old is still doing stuff like this, its a total hit and miss. Some nights they sleep great, some nights they don't... but I do think that a key is a good routine that you stick to, a set bedtime and set naptimes.. Try the No Cry Sleep Solutions, awesome book!

  59. Oh, I am a follower of your blog!

  60. I feel your pain. Noah likes to be up every 2-3 hours at 5 months old and every now & then he throws a curve ball and I get like 5 or 6 instead. I recently read a website about neurological growth spurt too, which I found so fascinating. Might be a good read for you too:

  61. My 5 month old is just now sleeping through the night. He goes to bed at 8:30 and is up to eat at 5:30 and back to sleep until 8:30 the next morning. I'm so scared of when he starts REALLY teething. I'm sure our sleep will suffer!

    ReplyDelete
  62. The baby isn't here yet but I'm definitely thinking of investing in a baby sleep bag of our own!

    ReplyDelete
  63. I would absolutley love a new mattress. I'm going to have to look into the sleep sack as my 6 month old is still up a few times a night and I just have to rewrap the blanket on her so she gets warm. I am very jealous of your sleep schedule. I have always been afraid of SIDS and that is why my little girl is still in a bassinet right next to me.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I've got my fingers crossed that Lil J keeps up with the good sleeping schedule. My little one (almost 1 year) goes down around 8pm, wakes around 5am, nurses, and goes back down until 6:30 or 7:30pm. I would be rested if I actually went to bed at a reasonable hour instead of staying up!

    ReplyDelete
  65. Extra Entry- I've been considering the Contours Options II Tandem- since my husband and I are getting ready to try for Baby #2.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I totally know what you mean! I have three under 4 so if it's not the baby waking me up it's one of her big brothers. Maybe I just need to get sleep sacs for all three!

    ReplyDelete
  67. Extra entry- I also like the pink wonderbug activity center because having two boys first makes it so you don't have very much pink in the toys!

    ReplyDelete
  68. I would love to win! We are having twins in a few months and have been looking a mattresses!

    ReplyDelete
  69. Oh and I am a follower of you blog!

    ReplyDelete
  70. I've heard such good things about those sleep bags, but since our baby will come right before summer I've been worried that even the light sleep bag will be too hot. This one sounds like it will work though!

    ReplyDelete
  71. So jealous! My daughter is almost 2 and still wakes up every once in a while...baby # 2 is on her way and maybe just maybe before she comes I will get an entire nights sleep! (Fingers crossed)

    ReplyDelete
  72. I am so happy you both manage to sleep well.

    I wouldn't mind winning the prize :)!

    ReplyDelete
  73. Wish my little man would sleep through the night!! 6 months old today and I'm still waking up 3 times a night AAAND he has been in his crib by himself since he was 2 months old :-/ maybe that mattress would help???

    ReplyDelete
  74. Congrats on the full night sleep!!I'm sure that more good sleep karma is headed your way!

    ReplyDelete
  75. WOW! Yea for you and your sleep and yea for such a great giveaway!!

    ReplyDelete
  76. Well, hopefully she will get back on her schedule. Try giving her some teething tablets to nibble on because she's about the age Moo started cutting her first set of teeth.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Hmmm...if I could I would love to get/win one of everything from Kolcraft. They make great quality products. We's sleigh crib is by them and we love it. If only we can get her to sleep in it. LOL.

  78. Yay for the sleep-filled night and awesome giveaway! The jeep overland strollers also look cool.

    ReplyDelete
  79. H-Man is 10 months old *woah!* and he sleeps roughly from 9 pm to 8 am. :) He's been doing this for awhile, but the trick for us is co-sleeping!!! He DOES NOT sleep anywhere near this if we aren't sleeping together.

  80. Karma both dotes upon and angrily punishes me as well. I love that your baby has such a great mattress! I would love to put my unborn child on one as well. I also love Kolcraft's Jeep Overland Sport Jogging stroller! I plan on getting one so I can keep working out after le bebe is born.

  81. The first night my daughter slept through the night was when we moved her from a bassinet in our room to her own crib in her room. It lasted from the time she was 6 weeks old until she was 5 months (when she got a pretty nasty infection). It was pure bliss and having it taken away was pure torture.

Now that we're pregnant with baby #2 I'm debating whether or not to allow this one to sleep in our room at all!

    ReplyDelete
  82. Good sleep is worth more than gold. I'm glad you are finally getting some!

  83. I'm going to have to invest in one of those sleep bags for my friend. I love coming to your blog to find cool things to get as gifts for her and other friends.
It could be lil' J is testing the waters because she's missing you and your husband. I was a bad mom and never slept with my children in the same room or with me in bed. I was afraid they would be 20 yrs old still not wanting to sleep by themselves. lol. You'll get there. Just hang on. :)

  87. You're so funny Jennifer! As I was reading your blog and you were talking about her waking every two hours, I was thinking...maybe it's a growth spurt and then you made the comment that that's what people say when their baby is getting on their nerves...HAHAHA!!! It's so true!!! LOL! Too funny. My little girl is 4 months...wakes up once usually at night at 2:30. I'm contemplating putting her in the room with her brother, but i don't want her to screw up his schedule if she doesn't decide to sleep through the night....ugh!

    ReplyDelete
  88. I am so glad you have experienced sleeping through the night!! Caroline started sleeping through the night at about 10 weeks. The first night that she slept longer than 3 hours, I panicked when I awoke and looked at the clock!=) I thought something was wrong, or I had slept through her crying (which is ridiculous, because I am a light sleeper, and she wool;d have continued to cry if she was truly hungry.). After rushing to her room to make sure she was still breathing, I looked at my peacefully sleeping baby and went back to bed thankful. We moved her out of the bassinet in our room and into her own crib/room when she was 6 weeks old, and she went from waking every 1-2 hours to 3-4. Since she was born I have had the same night time routine....bath at 730p, followed by 2 stories, singing hymns, and then turning on her noise machine and settling down to nurse. At night, I nurse her to sleep, and she is always asleep by 915p. She sleeps until 6 or 7, without waking at all. She does make up for nursing during the day, which can make it difficult to do a whole lot since she nurses so frequently. But, hey, if it helps her sleep through the night, then I am sticking with her routine! lol I think, it is just about finding what works for your child...because no two are alike, what the books say may not work for you. But, good luck!!

  89. OMGAH! Yay Lil J! How awesome is the world when your baby sleeps at night! Congrats! I hope she keeps it up!

  91. Well then Happy Holidays and New Year to you! Lil J decided to bring you the gift of slumber. As a new mom, isn't that the best gift of all? lol

    ReplyDelete
  92. Oh, and if I could have ANYthing from Kolacraft it would be the Sealy Sweet Pea® 2 in 1 Maternity & Nursing Pillow. I believe you reviewed something similar and remarked on liking it. Plus, it goes along with the sleep theme of the post :)

    ReplyDelete
  93. We've been stuck at one wakeup per night for awhile, but lately my 5 month old son has been having a hard time going back to sleep after his midnight snack. I spent an hour with him at 4am trying to coax him back to sleep last night.

From the picture you posted of Lil' J I can see she was sleeping on her tummy. Do you often put her on her tummy or does she roll over to it? My little guy will ONLY sleep soundly on his tummy and I am going a little crazy worrying about SIDS. I don't know if you usually answer questions like this, but would love to know what you do.

  116. i don't trust the cheapo mattress that we currently have for our crib so my daughter has mostly slept with us. i'd love a healthy mattress for #2 due this spring. maybe my husband and i will have a little more room for ourselves!

  118. Ollie is nearly 18 months old and has yet to sleep through the night. Out of our 4 (soon to be 5) children, only our 11 year old sleeps all night. Win or not, I do think I'm going to try that mattress. Maybe BabyNoName will sleep through the night and we'll be AMAZED and I'll have to buy 2 more for The Middles! :) SOOO jealous of anyone that sleeps, and get more than irritated when I hear someone say they're just EXHAUSTED from "only sleeping 7 hours last night". SEVEN HOURS?!?!? IN ONE NIGHT?!?! We've not slept that long in one night in.. wow.. over five years. hahah!

  122. My other grandson, he's almost 5 months has been keeping his parents awake almost nightly. I can definitely understand how relieved you must feel knowing she is sleeping in long stretches now and you can finally get some rest too. Gosh, I remember those days-and even deal with them a few times a week myself with the grandsons. Thanks for the chance to win such a neat mattress, and I love the fact that it is eco friendly too!
