#2 A boy or girl? Don’t matter

Party updates coming! I just got my photos from Forever Bliss Photography back today, and I'll get it all down on "paper" so to speak hopefully by this weekend. It was a blast and I can't wait to share!

But today's topic at hand... I can’t decide if I want a boy or a girl next time. Last time I wanted a girl SO bad. So did my husband, but for different reasons. I wanted someone I could doll up and train to be my mini me, and he knew I wanted to keep having kids until we got a girl. So getting that out of the way was a relief I guess.

I was convinced I was having a boy the first time. I though it would be God’s ploy to get me to have 10 kids, 9 boys and finally a girl. But he hooked me up and gave me what I wanted right off the bat.

Ok, let me stop here and just add my disclaimer--Of course I would have been happy either way, it’s a blessing to have a baby, and boy or girl, kids are awesome. I’m glad I have a child to begin with. But I’m just being honest here—I really wanted a girl.

So now I have my daughter and I’m thinking about #2. My feelings are totally different than last time. Last time I was reading Chinese lunar calendars and ways to get X chromosomes to the egg before the Y ones. This time I could care less.

Wait, let me rephrase… This time I would be totally happy either way (and by this time I mean next time, I’m not pregnant).

If I have another girl Lil’ J would have a little sister, a playmate, and hopefully a live-in BFF. We already have girlie clothes (which of course we’ve saved), all the bows we’ll ever need, and a few too many pink things around the house. I would LOVE to have two girls. It would be a blast and absolutely perfect. But… It would be just as fun to have a boy.

Despite all of the benefits of having another girl, I still want to know what it’s like to have a son. My husband really only wants two kids and if he convinces me, I’d hate to not know what it’s like to have a little boy to dress up and raise. It seems like a totally different dynamic that I would just love to experience. My husband would get a son to play sports with—Not that Lil’ J won’t play sports, I’d bet money she’s going to be very athletic, but it’s so fun to see cute little boys all decked out in football gear.

It would be neat to see the kind of girl my son wants to bring home someday, and quite frankly, I just want to see what a little boy version of my husband and I would look and act like.

One girl one boy would be perfect right? –WRONG. One of each is great and all but it’s not as cool as having two that can share the same clothes and secrets. So if I have one of each, it would be great, but I’d love to have one more so at least two of them can have that brotherly or sisterly comradely. But if I have another girl I’d like to have one more to see if I can get a son.

I guess the answer is just to convince my husband two isn’t enough. In the mean time, I’m happy to say I’m where I should have been the first time—Completely unbiased and happy with whatever we get. A healthy baby, boy or girl will be awesome. In fact, I don’t even want to find out the gender next time. I already have the girl I’ve always dreamed of and I’m torn 50/50 with what I want for a second, so it doesn’t matter to me. I figure if I have another girl and we do go for a third I’ll be dying to know if we’re having a boy or not, so this is my one chance to be surprised at the birth.

I already am planning the nursery theme: Royal Blue Birds. I have a majestic-looking frilly blue and white bedding that will work for a boy or a girl; and I have plans to make a bird mobile similar to Lil’ J’s butterfly one.

So bring it on, boy or girl, I’m excited and ready!

  1. That picture of Lil J is just TOO cute! Ok...so we had a boy first and then a girl. I was concerned that they'd each have their own things (room, toys, etc.) and not learn how to share. We decided to have one more to break it up! God has quite a sense of humor...He gave us twin boys! I feel very blessed and can't imagine it any other way. You make it work no matter how it goes down :0)

  3. I've been trying to conceive now for two years with one baby in heaven so I would naturally be happy with whatever comes. BUT I have bought a couple of cute dresses and hairbows...just in case. But there are few things as handsome as a little boy in a bowtie.

I would talk to your hubby about being open to the number of blessings. There are no material items or vacations that can bring as much joy as a child.

I love the pic of you and Lil J together. Just too cute!

  4. OMG....Im so thinking the same thing. My daughter just turned 4 and we are ready to have another, i was like you and badly wanted a girl, but this time im just not sure! A another girl would be awesome, I always wanted a sister myself...I watch my cousins that have sisters and I wish I had had that relationship. But a boy a mini Johnny(my hubby) would be cute beyond belief to see him all dressed out for basketball....lol.
But then I look at my aunts two boys and think OMG please dont let me have a boy, I just dont think I could deal with the whole "weeny" issue(holding it all the time), playing in the mud,bugs...Yuk. Im a girly girl+mild germ-a-phobe. My aunt just doesnt make having boys look fun at all! So Im up in the air, I just dont know what I want this time.

  5. That picture of her is SO CUTE! The belly laughs, I can just hear them...

We had three girls, 2 boys, a boy in heaven, 1 girl. I was from a family of 2 and I just can't imagine life in a family smaller than mine now.

Good luck with the boy quest. They are fun!

  6. I always wanted a boy first, mostly so he could be the protective older brother. My husband always wanted a girl first and over the course of our first pregnancy I began to cave and actually wanted a girl too. You see, there had not been a girl born in his immediate family for 30 years!!! The day we found out we were having a girl I couldn't help but be excited about it.

This time around I wanted another girl just so I could reuse all the clothes, shoes and bows I bought/made the first time around and I got my wish. My husband was happy about it as well because we "broke the curse" as I like to joke. We want 3 so we hope to have 1 more after this and so I was commenting to my husband that next time around I definitely want a boy. His reply..."nope, another girl!"

The poor man is clearly unfamiliar with teenage girls, he wants a house full of them! But in the end I won't complain either way.

  7. Oh my gosh, her skin is like chocolate dough! Rolls and rolls of it. How do you not eat her right up?

I love having my one of each. Pressure's off. Though, I would not have minded a sister for Audrey. I say there are pros and cons to each.

  8. My husband wanted a boy to raise to be his mini-me. I wanted a girl bc I grew up with an older brother and always felt like I got the short end of the stick. And we're having a girl :)

  9. We have two girls and another girl on the way. We both wanted a boy this time around really really bad. I tried doing all the things you are supposed to do to help have a boy. Everyone thought the baby was a boy and so did I. We got so caught up in the hoopla of having a boy. We found out we were having another girl and it almost felt disappointing. I'm being honest(I have two whole "the sex" blog posts). I can't believe I felt that way and was so ashamed I had those thoughts. I forgot that it is truly about having a healthy baby, no matter the sex. I just wanted my husband to have his boy...GOOD LUCK.

  10. Boy or girl, you guys make cute babies!

Our first is 6mos old & a boy. My husband has 3 siblings- all brothers. We have 4 nephews, no nieces... his family only makes boys, apparently. To that, DH & I say- I guess we'll have to keep trying until we get a girl!

  12. Well, I wanted a girl first but got a boy and love him so much. Now, I'm torn. I have a lot of bows and girl clothes because I really thought I was going to have a girl. But, my son is so cute so it would be fun to have another Eli. I do want a girl eventually because I already have a name picked out. Anyway, I'm also 50/50 on what I want next time but secretly I do want a girl.

  13. I was pretty much the same way. I wanted a girl first, but DH wanted a boy. When it get got close to finding out I still wanted a girl, but then kind of wanted a boy for DH.

The 2nd time around I was hoping for a girl since I would love my daughter to have a sister. Plus I knew DH only wanted 2 and if I had another girl, he'd want to try for a boy and have a 3rd. I wanted a girl only if I could guarantee the 3rd was a boy. LOL

We had a boy and I love having both. There's no "pressure" to have a 3rd, but now we both want a 3rd. :) I don't think he will ever go for 4 though.

My boy is/was such an easy baby compared to my girl. I would be happy with either for our 3rd. If only I could determine and choose an "easy" baby. I've contemplated not finding out the gender for the 3rd, but I don't know if we could wait.

  14. Oh man...that giggle pic is priceless. Boy or girl...you both make good looking spawnies...so no doubt the blog world, I mean, YOUR world, would be better with it in it!!!! Hooray for babies and TTC...

  15. That second photo of Lil' J is just TOO much. I just melted and am officially useless until further notice.

You've broken it down so clearly-- boy or girl? Each one is appealing! And then another kid later to keep the dynamics flowing either way. I think you're in a good, open space with it all. Lemme just say, too, that I am WAAAY excited for your pregnancy round 2, whenever it happens, and for the baby that it brings into your beautiful family.

Bring on the party pics, mama!

  16. Your daughters smile is so cute! I am 22 and unmarried with a boyfriend and I want kids just not right know. I would want a girl first but a little boy would be nice 2. I see the potential is both. I might have 1 boy and 1 girl if it happens right. My mom and grandma actually ended up having one girl (first) and 1 boy. I really think adoption would be cool too.

  17. Oh my gosh, her hair is just so crazy curly! It's adorable, just like that picture!

We have two boys and a little girl. When I was pregnant with my first, I was really hoping for a girl. Along came Ethan. Then we had Claire. The differences between the two are like night and day. Ethan was laid back. He loved to play alone. He hated sleep. He had a strong desire to run and shove things up his nose. My uncle (Ethan's former pediatrician) tells me he still holds the record for having the grossest thing extracted from his nose in his office. Claire is high maintenance. She like tantrums. She had colic. She LOVES sleep. She doesn't like for me to be out of her sight or not being near me in stores. She does not like things in her nose.

Grayson is just like his brother. Hopefully he stays away from shoving things up his nose though.

  18. I'm a long time reader but first time commenter. I just had to say that your daughter is the cutest baby ever! I love getting your posts and seeing her pictures, that big grin just brightens my day.
And I was the same way when I was pregnant with my 1st. I wanted a girl SOOOO bad and I truly would have been disappointed if I hadn't gotten one. With my second I would have been happy either way but was thrilled when I found out I was having another daughter.

  19. I love LOVE Lil J's smile, I am sure it brightens your day every time you sees it.
Next week we have our first scan – and hopefully the doctor can tell us if it is a boy or girl. Either way we will be SUPER happy. But my dream is to have one of each gender.
