Did You Pre-Wash Your Baby Clothes?

I've been debating this for a little while so I decided to write about it for my Parenting.com Project Pregnancy Blog and apparently it's a hot topic!

Here's an excerpt:
"Go ahead; call me a crazy lady, gross, or a bad mom. Everyone differs in opinions on every little parenting choice and I know pre-washing is just one of many things I’ll encounter.

It’s not that I’m all out against the process, or that I think people who do it are strange; I just never really thought anything of it. But I want you to understand my point of view... This is coming from a girl who wasn’t even pre-rinsing her fruit until a few years ago.

I was at my mother-in-law’s house and I had pulled a bag of grapes from the fridge and started munching.
"Did you rinse those off honey?" She asked me. No... I thought.

I mean, I knew I was SUPPOSED to rinse them off but I just never thought much of it. I never got sick before, and they taste the same.
I mean really, am I suppose to run this bag of grapes under the running faucet for a few seconds and all of the oh so dangerous chemicals and pesticides would magically seep right out through every grape, drip down out of the bag, and disappear down the drain. I guess I just don’t get all of the hype.

I’ve never really considered washing my new clothes before I wear them. Do people do that? Ok, some do, I’ve heard. Other people can try on the clothes before me, or return them and who knows, there could be something like stranger sweat on it. My goodness. Or worse... The chemicals used to preserve the clothes and keep them looking nice on the rack.

I’m not trying to mock the situation here, I do understand for some people it’s comforting knowing your clothes are REALLY clean before wearing them, but I guess I kinda like the "brand new" look and smell of clothes before they lose their new clothes virginity in my washing machine.

When it comes to baby clothes, I guess the issue is some babies have allergic reactions or skin irritation from wearing new clothes. My theory is I won’t know until I try. If I put one of her adorable, still-creased Gerber onesies on her and she breaks out in a rash, ok, sure, I’ll wash the rest of them before the first wear. But if she does just fine, is it so bad for her to wear something brand new ONCE?"
That's not all... I go on, so you can read the rest of my pre-washing debate here. A penny for your thoughts!?

Oh, and a side note that I didn't write in the post but I notice in a lot of people tell me: They pre-wash the FIRST baby's clothes but then don't with the rest. What's up with that? ... And we wonder why kids suffer from "middle child syndrome."

Another someone mentioned a friend pre-washing EVERYTHING then her baby was a different sex than expected *dies*.

  1. I like the new clothes look of my clothes too and absolutely hate to have to wash it after I've worn it as much as possible. You just never seem to get the same creases or shape after it's washed. With my baby clothes, I did prewash everything and had it all ready and waiting. I get what you are saying but, sometimes clothes are a little stiff etc and smell funny when they are new. The baby's skin is so soft and so easily irritated. Why risk putting them through it? Now that my kids are bigger, I don't bother unless something feels particulary scratchy.

  2. I did before I realized that I should have washed only a few outfits to start. But I have really sensitize skin and was afraid that new baby boy would too (he did). I use a free and clear detergent. I don't know if it made a difference but considering his skin problems from the beginning, it was a good choice for me.

  3. I pre-washed everything we had BEFORE he was born...afterwards whatever i bought I usually had to put him in that very same day because I just couldn't wait LOL.
I think it's just one of those exciting things to do before baby comes...get the clothes ready by taking the tags off and washing them ..sort of like a right of passage lol

  4. I do prewash everything. I do NOT use one of those special baby detergents either--I use a "free and clear" detergent for the whole family, and that includes baby. (I do have a special detergent for cloth diapers, but that's a whole other conversation LOL!) Anyway, I do prewash them to get the stiffness out, including the stiffness of tags--tags can really be evil. I also like getting out the 'from the box' wrinkles and such.

I also keep outgrown clothing for later babies, and I wash it before it goes in the box (obviously) and again when it comes out (because it often gets musty).

You know, something else I hadn't thought of before a prior commenter mentioned it was smell...a newborn is so sensitive, everything is new. It seems like it might be gentler on them to have their clothing at least all be the same smell-wise. They are being inundated with so many new sensory things, the last thing they need is for their clothes to smell different each day. The smell of clothing can be totally overwhelming, sometimes even for me as an adult, so I like everything washed.

  5. I always pre-wash! This video might convince you to: http://tinyurl.com/yeguux2

  6. I didn't really think about it but I did pre-wash everything in my anxious waiting and getting ready. I wanted to wash, fold, and find a place for everything. Now, sometimes I do, sometimes I don't.

  7. I pretty much agree with you. I dont always wash my fruits & stuff because like you said... is everything really just going to disappear from water hitting it for a second?!

So with the baby clothes and MY clothes... nope. I don't wash them first. Maybe now that you mentioned all the things that come along with adult clothing (like sweating and stuff) but for baby clothes... seriously.. :/ I just don't get it.
I like my clothes still smelling like the store (especially when I shop at Abercrombie & Fitch and Hollister) so I don't want to wash that smell off. Or what if it shrinks and then I didn't even get to wear it once!

I suppose like you said, if you notice a reaction with the first outfit then wash the rest.

  8. I prewash everything because I've got sensitive skin and have passed it down to my little boy. I can't even change to scented detergent because we have rashes break out all over. :( So yep, I'm a prewasher here.

  9. I prewashed all of my sons clothes twice. I don't like the chemical smell that a lot of clothes have and I also wanted to get all the wrinkles out and press what was required and look at everything ready to go. The reason I did them twice was because I did the first when I was about 6 months along and they got dusty in the closet! I also prewash my new clothes and husbands. I don't always do it, 99% of the time I do but sometimes one of the three of HAS to wear it right then! We do not use a special detergent, the babys clothes get washed like ours.

  10. Well, they prewash the first baby's clothes but not the rest for a few reasons:

With the first baby, there's not much else to do, so it doesn't seem like a chore. With the rest, you're kind of busy with *their* laundry.

With the first baby, you have to prove what a great mom you're going to be. With the rest, you know better. No one cares. Really.

With the first baby, you just do what you're told. With the rest, you cut every corner you can get away with. Who are these people who make up these rules, anyway?!

    Those are my reasons, anyway.

  11. When I was prego, I washed EVERYTHING... a few times!!! I was nuts! I was told I had to, so I did it and it helped to pass a day when I was huge and did not want to leave the house.

Now that my little one is older, I don't. I don't think that it is bad of me or anything. But I needed an outfit for her one day, an emergency outfit if you know what I mean, and I had two options, let her stay in soaked clothes or put her in a brand new outfit straight from the store. There was NO way that I would let her stay soaked so I opted for the brand new outfit and nothing happened of it. No rash, nothing. Since then I haven't really worried about it.

I never wash my new clothes, maybe I should but I don't. I hate washed jeans. I buy a pair of jeans because of the way that they fit and I know that everyone agrees that jeans lose their 'fit' after washing and drying (whether dryer drying or air drying)... they just don't feel the same.

  12. I prewash everything. I mean honestly people are touching your babies clothes who knows what is on their fingers? Also, babies skin is normally very sensitive, clothes are normally stiff and scratchy and have a lot of chemicals on them. It is such a simple step to wash everything so why not do it? That is just my opinion!
Also, wash your fruit. All sorts of different things get onto the skin of your fruit. You may have not gotten sick so far but you still could. Do you wash your lettuce??? For one thing there is so much dirt that still stays on fruit and veggies I would rather not have the crunch of dirt! =) Also if you have e-coli sp? or something on the outside of your fruit when you cut through the fruit it can get onto the inside and you will eat it. Sorry, this was long I am so anal about washing stuff...I hate germs!!! =)

  13. With my first, I did. I washed them all in Dreft.

With the second, NOPE. Nothing. Didn't even pull the tags off until he was born. Why? Because you don't know how big your kid is going to be, and you might be able to take half the stuff back or give it to someone else once they're born. My daughter was already into 0-3 month clothes at birth and outgrew them within weeks; same with my son. So far, I've had no use for Newborn sizes.

I don't use baby-safe detergent, either. Waste of time and money, in my opinion. Neither of my kids have had rashes or anything.

I do wash my fruit, just because you never know what was on the hand of the person who picked it and it's going into your mouth!

    ReplyDelete
  14. I do prewash all my babies clothes, blankets everything that will come in contact with our baby. They are usually stiff and rough on a newborns skin. People in the store touch all over them too.

I am expecting my 8th blessing. I have washed ALL of my childrens clothes before they wear them. I wash clothes in Dreft and wash the babys clothes seperate from all the rest in the family. (I have a bag I can put socks etc. in, they are so small).

I do not put baby clothes in the dryer, unless it is on air. I either use the air setting or hang them up. They will usually shrink quite a bit on the heat. Then, that perfect outfit you have for baby will not fit.

We also wash our fruit and carry hand cleaner in our vehicles. Sounds like a bit much maybe to some but... Next time you go shopping take a baby wipe with you in the store. Wipe off where your hands will go and where a baby would touch. You would be in shock at just how dirty those shopping baskets are. Blessings,

  15. I did wash my daughter's onsies and socks, thinking if those were clean, she would be protected from everything else. And I do wash my fruit all the time. When I was a kid, I saw a lady on some show who didn't have arms, so she used her feet like hands. They showed her at the grocery store picking fruit. I'm pretty sure she didn't live in my city, but the image has stuck with me all these years.

  16. I always prewash the clothes. I wash mine as well when I buy them from a store before wearing them. Have you ever smelled clothes off the rack? They definitely reek of some kind of chemical. I don't like the thought of people handling the clothing them putting them on me or my baby.

I view it this way: while the woman in the article explains that she won't know until she tries? I'd rather not take the risk. Doing a couple of loads of laundry beats having to treat a rash. If you don't have time to do it, baby clothes are really light so taking them to a fluff and fold won't cost too much.

  17. I'm glad you wrote about this cause I was just like you. I never washed clothes before I wore them. I never thought too much about it...then I heard - from some medical person. Cant remember if it was a friend or in an article, but anyhow I heard that you should prewash all of your clothes because when the clothes are just finished being made they may have the dyes &/or chemicals that they use in the process still on them. So its not necessary but its better for your skin. So I did it for myself for so long I just did it w my son. My husband thinks Im crazy but I say hey...you never know. Then I also think about where the clothes were before (like rats crawling through the clothes at the warehouse..yeah I do go there). Funny thing though...I've never thought about the other people who tried it on before me! Man Im just a special special lady

  18. I prewash everything I buy for myself and for my kids. Even for my second baby I prewashed everything. You don't know what chemicals will give your baby hives or breathing issues! A lot of those chemicals would give me an asthma attack and a baby has lungs that are even smaller.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I washed everything before he wore it for about the first year. Infants do have such sensitive skin that I didn't want to chance it with my little guy.

    ReplyDelete
  20. With my daughter, I prewashed everything in Dreft and had it hanging in her closet 2 months before she was born LOL. I learned. She outgrew stuff so fast that she never wore most of it and I couldn't exchange it because it was washed.

With my son, I prewashed his coming home outfit and a few sleepers. In All Free and Clear because it works fine at half the cost of Dreft. And we're a family with skin allergies. Anything he didn't get a chance to wear before he outgrew, I was able to exchange for a bigger size because they were unwashed with tags attached.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I totally agree with you! I did pre-wash all the baby's clothes though because everyone was getting on to me about doing it. It was a pain, but hey now they are all clean! lol

    ReplyDelete
  22. I think I washed all the clothes (a lot of hand-me-downs) before my son first wore them not necessarily new clothes I bought after that.

I pre-wash all my stuff now though because I saw a Dateline story about stores selling used and dirty lingerie and it grossed me out. Especially undergarments and pajamas.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I prewashed everything because the dyes and chemicals used in the clothes. I figure we keep them as safe as we can in utero, why not try to do what we can to keep them safe when they enter this world. There are very few things we can control, but doing a few loads of laundry is easy and worth it in my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I don't pre-wash my clothes and I never considered pre-washing my future child(ren)'s clothes. Crap . . . I don't know if I should feel dirty or liberated.

    ReplyDelete
  25. If anyone in your family has skin sensitivity, pre-wash. You don't know what chemicals have been used either. Some of my sons have sensitive skin, so I have to prewash. Plus, think about where those clothes have been before they were hung on that rack. I'm sure the environment was not pristine.

For food? Well, I was a begruding pre-washer and then while I was washing my fresh spinach, well, it looked like there was something in it, so I washed it super good. A week later, all that spinach was pulled off the shelf due to e-coli. Now, pre-washing fruit and veggies is a must, though still irritable.

  26. I pre-washed everything when I was pregnant but since my daughter was born I haven't pre-washed anything new. It's hard enough keeping up with the laundry anyway! Plus I usually want to see her in what I've bought pretty much straight away lol! With the next one I will probably just wash second hand things and not be so fussed about pre-washing the new stuff.

  27. I pre-washed everything and was very glad that I did. Once my son was here, I was breastfeeding, pumping, forgetting to eat, forgetting to sleep, etc. The last thing I wanted to worry about was doing laundry. I recommend it! :)

  28. I did pre wash everything for my daughter from before she was borne, and still do she is 5 now. She has never put anything on straight from the store before it was washed, just because I am so paranoid about germs. Really you never can know where those things were, while they were maid, travel, in the stores.
I worked in several stores when I was in high school/and over summers, and trust me you don't want to know where those clothes are while shipments are coming in, and they are being sorted out! It is dirty and I would never put that on my child or me and my family ;)

    ReplyDelete
  29. I am mixed on a few of these. I would pre-wash somethings but not all. It really just mattered with the situation-for example: before they are born- didn't wash anything newborn size because i have big babies and so some things i would have to take back and exchange for a larger size.

    ReplyDelete
  30. So...not only do I pre-wash my baby clothes....I pre-wash baby clothes that I give as gifts!!

Ya - that means they can't take it back. I figure they can re-gift it if they don't want/use it...which saves them money and a trip to the store. and how nice is it when you're way pregnant to get just-washed clothes!! Anyway, it's what I do.

I pre-wash my baby stuff with ALL:free and clear. The Dreft packets have sooo much fragrance and can irritate the baby's skin.

I didn't have the energy to wash in the 2 weeks after the baby. It helped to have everything washed, folded, and put away. Plus it helps push back the "can't wait to see her...why isn't she here yet" crazies.

I think having a washer/dryer at your house is way more important than pre-washing baby clothes. Diapers leak. You go thru those cute outfits like crazy!

  31. I ALWAYS prewash, and here are my reasons: First- because all my children are prone to eczema, and my first child got his very first outbreak because I put a jacket on him I never washed. The ped told me that would be enough to trigger an attack.
Secondly- I have worked at Baby Gap, and now work at Old Navy and so have first hand seen what the clothing goes through. Trust me, it doesn't come out of a bag, go onto a hanger, and wait for you to buy it.
Although I do agree that they lose their crisp new look when you wash them. I saw on SITS you say you might be interested in a new blog header, if you look at my site I just had mine redone and if it's the style you like, below it is an email of the person who did it.

  32. Before my son was born, I pre-washed all of his 0-6 month clothes in Dreft. It was a fun way to prepare for baby during my nesting stage. I didn't wash any bigger sizes in case he was smaller or larger and the seasons wouldn't match up. Then, I figured I could return them and get my money back or consign them to get some money towards something else.

After he was 6 months old, I got tired of spending money on a separate baby detergent and just used All Free & Clear. He does have eczema issues so I have to be careful about what we use.

  33. I never did the pre wash... It seemed like overkill to me.

  34. I am a pre-washer. Not because of all the hype or anything like that, but myself, my husband and both my current children have sensative skin. So, for the first wash I buy Dreft, pre-wash the clothes, and then after that, (and after Dreft is gone, dont want to waste money) the baby clothes get washed with the rest of our clothes just like normal.
Normally, because of the sensative skin, all our clothes get pre-washed no matter what. Christmas day I am that mom washing all the clothes the kids got for Christmas so they can wear them the next day. It's just something I have accepted I have to do.
The only time I put the kids in clothes not pre-washed, are if there are accidents. Then I would rather take the chance of a rash (which normally happens) or leave them nasty.
In fact today is the day I took all the tags off the clothes, blankets, burpies, bips, etc and I am going to pre-wash them this weekend since I am going to be induced next weekend. I would've done it sooner, but there is soo much dust here it wouldn't have been worth it.
    Hugs to you.

  36. I am definitely a pre-washer here. I have prewashed each of my children's clothes before they wore them, and will do the same with this baby (I'm 32 weeks pregnant). I still prewash my other kids' clothes and they are 4 and 2. I prewash my clothes before wearing them too. I prewash blankets, burp cloths, bibs, etc. as well. I don't use the fancy baby detergents though, All Free and Clear is what we use on all of our clothse.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I prewashed my son's first clothes. A lot of them were hand-me-downs and I didn't know what they were washed in prior to my getting them. The new stuff all smelled of the store and plastic bags and all kinds of stuff, so I didn't want that touching my new baby. As he got older, I stopped doing it. Now he's almost a year old and I don't prewash any of his stuff. Now, his cloth diapers required several prewashes to prep them so they'd be absorbent enough to use, but that's another story.

One thing I will mention on here is never to use fabric softener on sleepwear for babies. Most baby sleep wear has a flame retardant in it, and fabric softener will negate that. I never knew that until I was pregnant and on bedrest reading tons of stuff. Besides, it's full of gross nasty chemicals anyways. Dryer balls work just as good on softness and no nasty junk. Plus, they last a lot longer than one bottle of softener or box of dryer sheets... some last upwards of 5 years!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I prewashed all my sons clothes when I was pregnant and I still do now that he is 6 months. Babies have sensitive skin and companies coat clothing in chemicals some of them even formaldehyde based to keep them from wrinkling during shipping and while they hang on the racks or sit on shelves. They also put chemicals on them to keep the clothes from developing mildew not to mention all the people who touch the clothes and the people who buy them and return them I've worked in retail at a department store before and you'd be surprised some of the things people return and if it isn't damaged or defective the store puts new price tags on them. So I just wash them to be sure they are clean! I'm kind of a clean freak though.

  39. Haha, I'm one of the guilty ones that did everything right for the first baby. Prewashed clotes and only used Snow. Second one came along and didn't prewash and third one...went in the laundry with everyone else'. I think with the first baby you just don't know what you know by the time you have the 3rd one.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I did simply because everyone told me too. Everyone's always told me its to prevent any allergic reactions. I washed all of the new baby clothes in Dreft. However, I don't wash any of mine before wearing unless they're a major wrinkle issue that a quick fluff in the dryer can't take care of.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I went ahead and pre-washed everything before our little guy was born. After that point, I didn't need to buy him anymore clothing for quite a long time, and the first time I bought him an outfit I just threw the cute little thing on him.

And then he turned all red... It broke my heart that I had made him uncomfortable, but that was months ago now and I think he's forgiven me. Now all of his new clothes get washed in baby-friendly Rockin' Green before they touch his skin.

For the record, that's about the only thing I pre-wash... Hubs and I just got new bedsheets and we just threw them on the mattress. Pure 700-count awesomeness...

  42. I not only pre-washed the baby clothes in Ivory Snow so they would have that baby smell, I went and sniffed them every day I had to wait for the baby to come AFTER I washed them!

    Yes, I'm a little neurotic.

  43. I shop a lot (like, a whole lot) at the thrift store, so I definitely prewash, but with brand new clothes I never thought about it. Also, if a child has sensitive skin. They could easily have a reaction to the detergent you use. I just make sure I keep the actual baby washed up.

  44. I don't always wash CLOTHES, but I do always wash new undergarments - panties/underwear, bras, socks - and things like towels/rags, sheets/bedding, etc. I'm not really sure why I discriminate haha but that's what I do. I'm not sure that I ever washed one of my baby's clothes before they wore them. I don't see the necessity. I am, however, BIG on rinsing my fruits :) lol

  45. I prewash! I think about all the people who are touching it first. The people who hang the clothes on baby hangers, people who pack it in shipping boxes, and then those who unpack them and hang them in the stores.

Not that I don't trust employees or anything [heck sometimes I don't] but you never know what germs they are carrying. While I'm not a germaphob or anything I do have a thing about germs getting to my newborn.

We found out later our daughter is like me and is sensitive to some detergents so we prewash everything now. I pre washed my son's clothes too incase he is sensitive as well. It will probably just be a habit anyway since we do it for my daughter.

Now pre washing EVERYTHING before a baby is born may not be the smartest. After all, there is no guarantee your baby really is a boy or girl until they are born. That happened to friends of ours. Their first was proclaimed a girl at the ultrasound and was born a boy, their 2nd child was proclaimed a boy and was born a girl. Caution is always wise! lol

  46. I tend to pre-wash almost everything simply because I personally have sensitive skin, so just a little funk on something can make me all annoyingly broken out. That said? I've thrown on jeans before without washing them in a pinch, and if it doesn't kill me? I don't think it would kill the baby either. I intend to make a common practice of pre-washing, but that's definitely not the top thing I'm going to sweat when it comes to baby prep ;)

    ReplyDelete
  47. I pre-washed everything with my son and I still do with my daughter... as well as the clothes for my husband and me. It's not that I'm afraid that someone else's sweat and germs may be on them, but more the fact that my cousin worked for a logistics company that moved clothes from the manufacturer's warehouse to the stores warehouses and you really do not want to know what is in the crates with the clothes! All I'll say is EWWWW!

  48. While I don't pre-wash clothes for myself, I will definitely pre-wash clothes for my kiddos. Just because I don't want to risk irritating that precious, soft baby skin. I even bought the ultra-expensive (and probably unnecessary) laundry detergent.

I'm not sure that I ever washed one of my baby's clothes before they wore them. I don't see the necessity. I am, however, BIG on rinsing my fruits :) lol

  54. I never did the pre wash... It seemed like overkill to me.

  55. I am mixed on a few of these. I would pre-wash somethings but not all. It really just mattered with the situation-for example: before they are born- didn't wash anything newborn size because i have big babies and so some things i would have to take back and exchange for a larger size.
