Sleep... I'll Enjoy it While it Lasts

The #1 thing I hear over and over and over and over again from people who have children and know I'm having my first is "Enjoy your sleep now." Like I posted over a year ago before I was even THINKING about having a baby, was the #1 thing I'll miss... Sleep.

I love to sleep, I love naps. I HATE waking up early, and I can get pretty emotional when I don't get enough sleep. I'm not so cranky, but I'm emotional (I'm normally emotional but this magnifies it).

However... I think certain things make loosing sleep worth it: Christmas morning, new puppies, and procrastination on a research paper. When we first got Snoop I'd wake up at every little stir he made, and I was sure to take him out of the bathroom at the slightest appearance he had to go.

This meant getting bundled up in my winter jacket, getting his leash hooked up, and trekking out into the snow while I waited for him to "go potty." Granted, I know this isn't as demanding as waking up to a crying baby every few hours, and staying up while she eats and falls back asleep, but it was a little bit of practice.

Pregnancy... Well that's even more practice. I think you could argue the lack of sleep most women get the months before baby is born are in preparation for what's ahead. I have to pee at least twice a night, which could be worse.

I use to have soreness in my back when I first started to get bigger, so I decided it was time to try out some different sleeping techniques. Putting a pillow between my knees helped a little. Then one of my friends gave me her pregnancy pillow. It's shaped kind of like a worm. I liked it but since I'm so tall (about 5' 11") I had a hard time keeping it between my knees as well as under my head. I also was missing a nice little wedge for my tummy.
I got a Womb for Two and honestly haven't looked back. Based on what I've researched, it's the most comprehensive, and best pregnancy pillow out there. No really, my husband has even tried it an he likes to use it when I get up (not that he's pregnant, he just likes it)!

We have a California King bed in our room, and a Queen bed in the nursery. It takes up about half of the Queen bed but fits AWESOME in the King.
It was developed by Julie, a former prenatal massage therapist. Over 12 years of helping women in her own Pregnancy Massage Center, women would tell her about their sleeping problems, and she's send them home with tips. One day she had an "a-ha" moment for a design, and the idea was born.

She practiced with clients, then tested it herself during her own pregnancy and tweaked a few final details.
Julie has been married since, 2006 and they had Aviva, their little girl, in 2008. Together they've done all kinds of social dancing (contra dance, waltz, tango, swing, etc.) Now their little girl is their favorite preoccupation! They're also very involved in the life of their synagogue, Congregation Beth Shalom.

This mama gave me some great advice to use as I become a mom.

{New Mama Advice}
1. Make sure you have help in the first few weeks, even if you have to hire someone!
2. Give yourself grace as you find your own center as a mom. Read and listen all you can--b/c information is power--and then trust yourself to make the right decisions for your daughter. Adjust as necessary.
3. We found ourselves in the attachment parenting camp in the non-guilt section. Attachment is a priority, and also sometimes you have to take care of yourself first. I recommend that as a happy parenting starting point.

You can learn more about the Womb for Two by checking out their website. You can also follow @Womb4two on Twitter or "Like" Womb for Two on Facebook.

Here's also a quick video of me showing off how it works. A BIG thank you to my husband for being my videographer. He cracks me up.

The pillows inside can be removed and reused after pregnancy as regular pillows. The case is easily washed, and it's all made right here in the USA! The only thing I find as a downside is less snuggling with my hubby. He's not much of a snuggler anyway so he's probably appreciate the break. The few nights I've tried sleeping without support, I'm feeling it the next morning, so I'm picking my battles.
I've been so excited to let my pregnant friends know about this pillow, to feature it and to give one away to one of my virtual baby shower party-goers this week!

If you'd like to WIN a Womb for Two visit their site and tell me one of the benefits you've learned about the pillow in the comments! Leave another comment with a bit of pregnancy advice if you'd like an additional entry. 1. This fact sold me on it: "pregnant women who get at least 6 hours of sleep a night in their last trimester have shorter labors and are 4.5 times less likely to have a Cesarean section." I'm expecting, but only 8 weeks along- I'll have to remember this tip!

  2. Wow, that pillow looks fabulous. It's been about 6 months since I've gotten sleep. lol. I think, when I wake up and say, hey, I got 3 straight hours of sleep last night, that was a feat in itself. lol. Right now I sleep on the couch, layiing on my left side, pillow between my knees, pillow under my feet (to keep them elevated) and two under my head (to help with heartburn lol). I think I will have no problem when the little one gets here. I get up at least 3 times a night, (a good night) or 4-6 times a night. Either really thirsty or I have to potty.
Anyways, I think the lack of sleep we get while pregnant does help (I too get super emotional without sleep) My husband is waaaaaay worse, so I'll be the night nurse. lol.

  3. more sleep = less likely to have a c-section
i never would have known that. if you read my most recent post you'll see that i'm stressing out about this whole trying to have a baby thing. i just need to relax and get some sleep, apparently.

  8. You just did a post about giveaways where I said I wanted to love them, but I always hate them...because even if I DO win, my prize never makes it to me. ANYWAY...if I were to win anything, this would be at the top of my list right now!!!!

I love all the combined features that keep it in place, make it easier to get in and out of, and help to eliminate pelvic pain (which is my number one complaint right now!)

  9. Pregnancy advice: If you feel like you need a nap, take one! If you feel like you need a drink, get one! If you feel like you need to pee, find a bathroom! Listen to your body as much as possible. It will make you more comfortable!

  12. I like how it helps support and align your back. With getting rear ended pretty bad on the freeway I have a bad back already...and now being pregnant i can never get a good sleep!

  13. Cool pillow! When I started having back pain, my husband got us a memory foam mattress as a Christmas present, and also a $100. memory foam pillow. Let me tell you after that I had no more migraines or back/neck pain! I also have a memory foam pillow I use between my legs and a wedge for my stomach. Cute video by the way!

  14. you know what's funny is when my son was first born sleeping was easy. when he was first born he slept so much and as he gets older i'm missing out on that sleep. now he doesn't really nap through the day, but the upside is that he sleeps until usually 10 am! (which i know is extremely rare)

    ReplyDelete
  15. The more sleep, less likely to have a C-section fact did not apply to me, unfortunately. I slept all the time when I was pregnant, but ended up having a C-section. Oh, well. :(

I just wanted to say that I really like your blog. It's cute, and I like reading about your journey.

  16. I 'liked' the fb page and I learned that on top of spinal alignment and therefore less back ache, this amazing wombfortwo eliminates hip ache! This is my main trouble being pregnant, I wake up with excruciating hip ache and have always been trying techniques to get rid of it! I'd LOVE to win this product. I've never won anything! 19. I'm not sure what pregnancy advice I can give you since you are further along than I am. My biggest advice to other preggos is to drink your weight in ounces of water each day. i.e. if you weigh 120 lbs, drink 120 ounces of liquid. It has helped alleviate almost all of my pregnancy-related complaints!

    ReplyDelete
  20. I love the sound of the lower back support! As someone who has always dealt with lower back pain, this is great news!

    ReplyDelete
  21. I had a similar pillow when I was preggo. Worked well.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Wow, that pillow is awesome. I wish I had stumbled across that when I was preggers with Moo because I was extremely uncomfortable pretty much the entire pregnancy. That would have saved me and her daddy lots of sleepless nights due to my tossing and turning and stealing all the pillows to find a comfortable fix. LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I like that you can remove the arm and leg pillows and still snuggle with the hubby. Comfort and Lovin' is perfect!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Seriously, that thing looks wickedly comfy! I do remember visiting their site, and my husband was not swayed when he saw the price of the pillow :).
I can see how the wedges helps aligns the spine because I have the first one that you showed and because I too am also pretty tall I find that my leg falls off a lot. It also does not give me any back or belly support and sometimes I try to wedge a little comforter in the spots, but it is never enough, or most times too much, and man do I feel those hip and back pains.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I like the fact that its a practical item. I am not big on purchasing items that can only be used for a limited amount of time, but because you can take the pillows out of the casing and use them with regular pillows...Perfect. And then if you get pregnant again you can just refill it.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Reducing heartburn would be a benefit I would love! My prego tip is to keep exercising. I can stay up longer and sleep better on workout days.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I learned that more sleep has been associated with a shorter labor.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Pregnancy advice: Cook for the freezer as soon as you get a positive test...in two weeks, the nausea will hit and this way you won't have to eat out.

    ReplyDelete
  34. OMG!! I want this soooooo bad!!! I nvr knew about this type of pillow! I am also tall and those other little "body" pillows are ridiculous lol
Going to their site I learned that the full length support can help reduce swelling in your feet and ankles! That's pretty awesome!

  35. Some REALLY good pregnancy advice DON'T let the random "idiots" get to you. Some people should just have tape permanently across their mouths :)
No seriously, DON"T RUSH BABY! She will come when she's ready as hard as that is to wait. :) I rush my daughter and although she got here safely I wish I would have just waited for her :)

  131. Pregnancy advice...well, if you haven't had enough...if this is your first pregnancy really take advantage of naps and the TLC offered by your husband. Any pregnancy after your first is not as relaxing...it can't be since you have someone else to chase around.

  153. I was sold on these key points
The Womb for Two Back & Belly Wedges:

    * Wedges support belly and uterine ligaments at two levels as your pregnancy grows *Only in Womb for Two*

    * Supports your low back for correct spinal alignment and maintains side position

my pregnancies cause a lot of trouble in my lower back due to 2 torn disks. My stomach kind of "supports itself" and I feel the ligaments pull constantly. Its painful! This pillow sounds like heaven

  168. Tips for swallowing pills when you are nauseous:
If your nausea comes and goes, wait half an hour to see if you feel more like swallowing a pill then.
After putting pills in your mouth, have water ready to swallow really fast. The worst moments for me are while the pills are sitting in my mouth.

  171. "pregnant women who get at least 6 hours of sleep a night in their last trimester have shorter labors and are 4.5 times less likely to have a Cesarean section."

I know this was said a few times but for me, this found to be 100% true in my situation. Last two months, I seriously slept like 14 to 16 hour days. I could not get enough sleep. Constant tired and I did what I felt was best was to enjoy the snooze......especially since the first 3 months of my daughter's life, I barley got sleep! I had an 8 hour labor total. I went from 3cent to 10 in the last 45 mins of the labor.

I had a body pillow but felt it wasn't comfy/fluffy enough.

  173. Pregnancy advice:
    1) Take up belly dancing. I am a belly dancer and you be amazed of how much it helps in staying physically active, stretches, muscle/strength, breathing and self expression.
2)Treat yourself to a message often if you can. When "mama is at ease" so is baby.
    3) Go with your instincts. Your instinct is the number one decision maker over anyone else. If you are not comfortable, don't understand procedures, you want something differently done, speak up. It is practice for time to come as the child grows and advice will be thrown at you on a daily bases.
