Christmas Gifts for a 6 Month Old and $100 Giveaway!

It's not that I'm anti-toy, it's just that I think kids have SO many toys these days. Now I know this is easy for me to say now because Lil' J is only nearly 5 months old and is just starting to show interest in some toys. I'm sure once she's older, walking, talking and into playing. But even then, I want to make a rule to where she can only have enough toys to fit in her toybox. When there's too much for that, it's time to donate and trade up.

I half expected I'd just go to a Goodwill myself and look for some toys I'd bleach clean but I decided Christmas and Birthdays are occasions we can splurge on new toys. But what's the best toys for her age group?

Right now she's still quite in the infant sensory stage, and likes things that are black and white, she loves mirrors, and things she can chew on, but she's starting to like to grab, and shake things, and I know by Christmas she'll be all over the cause-and-effect toys that involve banging, shaking, pushing pulling etc.

So off I set on an online adventure looking for Black Friday deals on baby toys.

I already bought her a Tickle Me Elmo (the regular one, not Xtreme) off eBay and a stuffed Cookie Monster to go with him. She loves Elmo and his voice so I know she'll love him.
I'm totally into VTech toys for some reason. Maybe because I've always been an electronics kid myself. I also figure if a toy is going to make noise and light up it might as well be an educational toy. I want to get Lil' J this VTech Touch and Learn Musical Bee. It's similar to the Fisher Price Laugh and Learn Puppy, which I also like, but it has better ratings and is only $18 at Walmart.
It plays upbeat songs when you bounce it around and soothing songs other times. It also helps teach numbers, colors and shapes. I'm actually trying to see if I can find one in Spanish since it's a given she'll be learning these things in English.

Another VTech toy I'm eyeing is this VTech Baby's Learning Laptop. It's only $14.54 at Walmart (it may be a Black Friday sale?) and it helps teach shapes, common objects, and feelings. She'll mostly be interested in the noises and lights it makes at this age, but in another year--If she's not bored of it yet, she can use the mouse pad and do more with it. This toy also has really high ratings and seems like babies like it quite awhile. It also comes in a pink but I'll get the more neutral blue.

If I'm going to splurge on one toy it's may be this 5-in-1 adjustable gym from Little Tikes. It looks really cool because it grows with her. She's just starting to sit up a little, but she could also lay down to play with it, or stand up with it when she's older. The ratings aren't as high and for being $45 at Toys R' Us, I'm thinking I may look around on Craigslist for it. Or, use our Babies R Us gift card for it (anyone know if TRU accepts BRU gift cards?).

I'm really into more of the simple things though like this wooden farm book. Lil' J loves books for some reason. When we bring out books at home to read to her every day, or if were reading or singing from books at church she loves to grab them. She loves board books and I think a wooden one she'd like even more. It'd be practically indestructible, and make a cool noise when the pages clap together.

This Sassy Fill and Spill Bucket is exactly what the name says and I think, exactly what babies love to do. Fill and dump... Mostly dump. So I think she'd like something like this, and it's only $10.

Lil' J also loves lights and things that move. I'm thinking about getting this Tiny Love Nature Soothing Serenade Mobile for her, but it's a little pricey too at about $45. She really likes the butterfly mobile I made for her, she has since birth. Now she kicks and laughs at it during the day, but at night she can't see it because it doesn't glow. I'm not sure if I'll get something to this extreme for her crib, maybe I'll get something more subtle, but I think she'd like it if there was something nice and glowey in there, and what better time than Christmas to get it for her!

Finally, one of our friends gave us this rain forest jumper and I packed it up since I was about 6 months pregnant with a ways to go. I forgot I had it and may save it for Christmas, or take it out before and see how she likes it.
If she does like it than I think she'll LOVE a door jumper (like a Johnny Jumper). I just can't decide if I'd rather the Sassy Seat Doorway Jumper that has lights and toys and fun things and is about $35.

Or the fancy smantsy Merry Muscles Jumper Exerciser Baby Bouncer that's about $85, but apparently lasts a long time and is better for your baby's feet etc. I just don't want to spend a lot of money if she ends up hating it. I think she'll love the bouncers though because she loves to kick and jump with us already.

So that's that for the toys on my shopping list. I'm much more into clothes myself. I used to think clothing was a boring gift but now that I have a child myself I understand why parents like buying them... To see their kids dressed up all cute! I'm in love with the Tea Collection. An online shop with children's clothing for the little citizens of the world! Here's a few of my favorites:
Croatian Floral Hoodie
Romanian Floral Top

Eniko Yoke Dress
Hungarian Floral Dress
All of the my blog followers (old or new) who leave a comment letting me know their favorites from this store before December 8th will be entered to win $100 to spend there! You get an extra entry if you follow @teacollection on twitter or if you let me know a Christmas gift recommendation for my husband or Lil' J (hehe, I'm cheating). Random.org will choose the winner, good luck!

  3. First I want to say that my son got that laptop toy last year for Christmas and a year later he still plays with it. He loves mashing the buttons and moving the mouse around. That's one I'm sure Lil' J will love. And bonus, it has volume control :)

As for that store, I love the style! There's a wolf shirt that I think my hubs would love for our son http://www.teacollection.com/product/T722020/Mt.-Tampa-Wolf-Graphic.html :)

  6. I highly recommend the jumper for Lil' J. We got a pretty simple one (no toys, lights or anything like that) from Babies R Us and it seems to be a good buy. Granted, my baby is too young for it yet.

Also, I believe TRU take BRU gift cards!

  10. And I have a gift idea for Lil' J - if she loves glowy things but you're not crazy about the 'unsubtlety' of the crib mobile, you might consider a Cloud B Twilight Turtle. It is nice and portable (doesn't have to sit out all day), not hideous, and it projects pretty glowing stars on the ceiling in three different colours. I love ours and can't wait to use it for baby.

  11. Hopefully I'm not the only one home on Black Friday - surprised you don't have a lot of comments yet on this one! Oh well, my faves that I've found so far: All the little Yoke dresses (the cut is cute!), the Brasov Pullover, and the Spiral Dreams Pajamas! But really, it's all so very adorable!

  12. I LOVE the hungarian floral dress!!! I actually have been searching Etsy (I am very new to that site and still don't quite know how to find what I am looking for) for a dress very similar to this!! Contest or not thank you for sharing these clothes! I think some Christmas shopping is in order for my 3 year old ;)

  30. I think if she has the rain forest jumper then she wouldn't need the doorway jumper. Of course I have personal issues with any doorway jumper...especially Johnny Jump up. My sister was strangled trying to get into one just before her 3rd Birthday. It's been 20+ years and I know they aren't designed the same, but it is still a personal issue. I can email the story.

Oh and I bought that mobile, but it wouldn't attach to my crib because our crib has thick rails on top. We went with a fisher one. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Fisher-Price-2-in-1-Projection-Crib-Mobile-Precious-Planet/10543151?sourceid=1500000000000003260330&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=10543151

The other ideas look awesome. She will LOVE them. My daughter has way too many toys. We are going to donate some this year, but she still has too many. :P

    I love this dress!!

  36. We have the VTEch Baby's Learning Laptop. We actually got it for my daughter when she was about 8 months old, and she LOVED it. She still plays with it and she's 2. My son discovered it when he was about 5 or 6 months old, and he just loves it too. He's now 1.

I was planning on getting our son the Fisher Price Rainforest Peek A Boo soother. It's bright enough for him to see at night, but dim enough that it doesn't disturb him when he falls asleep. It's easy for him to switch on and off himself.

We bought the 5 in 1 gym for our daughter (4months old now) and she loves it. we'll help her stand and she'll smash the buttons or kick at the spinny toys when she's laying down (shes still to small to reach up to touch the toys with her hands) We got it from walmart.com and it was only $35 so with the free site to store that's a much better deal.

  62. My son has the laptop and really likes the songs it plays, and he's two. Bouncers (more the ones that sit on the floor than the doorway ones) because I felt perfectly safe leaving my son in one while I ran and took a shower. He couldn't get out when I wasn't watching, and was entertained, too. One thing I love are Fisher-Price Peek-a-Blocks. They're blocks, which are great for building, and they all have something going on inside...stuff to look at, identify, or rattle around. They're awesome. There's an alphabet set, and there's also this Incrediblock (not cheap but super cool) with all sorts of activities with the block. They temporarily discontinued it when I was looking around for one for my son, but it worked out well because I got one on eBay with a TON of blocks for the same price as just the block itself brand new. It was in awesome shape, too. Enjoy :)

  63. I love the ana dot layered sleeve dress - I can just see my little MJ & her big sis in this...Ruth loves dressing MJ up just like her...

    ReplyDelete
  64. My daughter has the laptop. And she's been playing with it for the last year and a half. So you can't go wrong there. I just got her a new laptop for Christmas for ages 2+ which is more educational. She used the Fisher Price Rainforest musical crib toy that you attach to the side of the crib from 3 weeks old until I took it out when she was about 14 months old (because she had figured out how to get it off, and I didn't want it falling on her and hurting her. She still sleeps with her Fisher Price seahorse (it plays music) and she LOVES it! Won't sleep without it.. and best thing is that it's portable and not very expensive.

Anyways.. I think the Kimono Robes are very cute and look super warm!

  72. I love @teacollection, thanks for sharing them with us.

For a gift for Lil J, I think she would love some wooden blocks. Sol has some and she loves to stack them up. The ones we have are from pottery barn and they have alphabets, animals, colors and numbers on them, so we get in learning time with play time. They were 2nd hand so I am not sure how much they cost.

Also books, she can never have enough books. When buying books, I wanted to make sure that Sol was seeing 'beautiful brown children' b/c many times we are underepresented or misrepresented in lots of things. and I found some really cool books at target such as "I LOVE MY HAIR".

My uncle also wrote a book called Lullaby for daddy, by Edward Biko Smith, that I think is a good dual gift for LIl J and your hubby. It highlights the very special relationship btwn a father and his daughter. The baby girl in the book, which is inspired by my cousin Aliya is biracial and her mom illustrated the book.

However, if I was having a girl, clothes would SO be my personal issue. I have 3 boys and I am pregnant with my fourth and I can honestly say having boys saved me from debt. 120. If you don't already have one, I recommend the Playskool Explore 'N Grow Busy Ball Popper for your little girl. Also, I liked to take my daughter through the toy aisle (even at a really young age!) to let her "play" while I took note of which toys she was most interested in. Good luck and have fun shopping!
