I must have heard that a thousand times before I stopped to think about it. "Before green was cool."
Aint that the truth. I thought as I mouthed the phrase I knew was coming.
If anything is trendy right now like no other it's green products.
I'm bombarded with mom emails every morning issuing me a new warning about some product I use that's harmful to my baby and has links to cancer.--Air fresheners, glass cleaners, bleach, cell phones. I might as well move to a bubble and eat dirt.
These emails almost always offer up a green alternative which makes me scratch my head and wonder if that green alternative is the one sponsoring this mass email to scare me.
Well I'll show them. Instead of buying the toxic-free air freshener, I'll just let my house stink. And instead of washing my counters with that natural cleaner...Well, I just won't wash my counters.
Yes, ladies and gentle men, my plan is to just live in filth instead of fear.

Organic Cotton Girls Top from My Natural Baby Boutique |
"So, what's new? I do all of the cleaning."
So my plan to rebel against the toxic clean companies, and their expensive alleged "green" counterparts was short lived. But I haven't given up. I do want to be greener. To live greener, and feel like I'm making a difference. But I also don't want to feel ripped off.
Something that comes from the earth should be cheaper than something that's processed--At least in my mind. I know things that are processed are more often mass-produced, and more likely to cost less to make (at least that's what I hear) but there's gotta be other ways to be thrifty AND green right?
For one, I'm thinking of using vinegar to clean with. I dunno, I hear it gets the job done. I'm not sure what I think of my whole house smelling like vinegar but I imagine it'll be better than the smell of not cleaning. It's worth a try. Until we find out vinegar also has a link to cancer.
I'm also of thinking of joining a community garden. My town has dozens of community gardens and there's a couple right around my house. Organic food can be pricey, but if I grow my own it can be way cheap. I'm talking tomato seeds for like 10 cents. Renting a plot is only like $30 a year or less depending which you plant at. And this way I don't have to dig up my own yard... The plots are already there!

Organic Cotton Pants with Skirt from My Natural Baby Boutique |
I doubt I'll ever decide to grow cotton (it just don't seem right in my mind). But apparently non-organic cotton uses lots of cancer-linked pesticides (surprise, surprise!). I'd think it's not the end of the world since you wash your clothes, and you're wearing them, not eating them, but don't quote me on that. If you're still worried, stores like My Natural Baby Boutique make clothes with 100% organic cotton. That's where these cute Earthy-looking clothes are from.

So maybe I am jumping on the "green is cool" bandwagon, but really, is it that bad of a club to be in? Even if we do find out that it's all a hoax next year, or that it's already too late, we're gonna die--At least we gave it a try, and it's a well-meaning club to be in.
Thanks for making it to the bottom of my ramblings in this post. If you've survived, congratulations, now it's time for some freebies...

Hydrogen peroxide & tea tree oil - I learned about them at a Relief Society meeting but have yet to use them. Cleans well without the vinegar smell.

ReplyDeleteyo wassup!
ReplyDeleteI am really diggin' on the Crossover rib tops and the animal toys from My Natural Baby Boutique. I think my daughter would look adorable in it! And the dolls, I'm always looking for unique toy ideas. :)
I absolutely love all the pics you posted, especially the dirty hand one.
ReplyDeleteI use vinegar to clean! Mainly because I was worried about all the chemicals and stuff, but one of the positive side effects I have noticed is that though it can be smelly while you're cleaning, the smell is usually completely gone in less than 10 minutes. But, unlike the chemical cleaners, it does not leave the nasty chemical smell. If there's something particularly dirty you feel needs to be sanitized, I've heard that if you use two different spray bottles, one filled with vinegar and the other with hydrogen peroxide and spray the area with both, it disinfects better than bleach, but with no harmful chemicals.
ReplyDeleteI always hear people saying theyr'e gunna buy a green that and buy a green this....and in my head I'm always like....green? Wouldn't the GREEN thing be to NOT BUY these things and not contribute to the waste?
ReplyDeleteI'm not green. I guess I'm just not cool
I agree with the poster before: how is it green to buy more bottled/processed crap?! Vinegar works great!
ReplyDeleteAlso, my family makes regular contributions to a produce cooperative called Bountiful Baskets. Local produce {along with consuming in moderation} is my green. I think BB has pick up locations in Texas. Every week, for $15, we get a TON of fruits and veggies that bypasses grocery stores. I blog about my bounty every Saturday, if you want to check it out!
I love Lil J in these pictures! So beautiful.
I love the my natural baby swim diapers. Adorable, and C needs a new one. :D
ReplyDeleteI agree with the two above. I think things we already have substitute as good, non-toxic, "green" cleaners. I have thought about a community garden. It's a good idea. Great pics!
ReplyDeleteThere are SO many things to think about when it comes to going green, so the rambling is justified. :)
Yea, I'm really careful about what Green trends I jump on so to speak. I've always been one to recycle and with an allergy kid I have to watch what kind of chemicals I use in my house anyway. I think that if we start with simple inexpensive ways of going Green like recycling, donating items instead of leaving the beside the road for the trash company, planting trees, etc our environment would improve tremendously.
ReplyDeleteHappy Earth Day to you and J!!
I Love these pictures....Its funny that you selected the yellow headband for this post...bc it is part of my new line, that's not even on the Etsy shop yet. Its definately upcycled. It started when I looked at my donation pile and realized it was a mountain of possibilities, a pile of glorious fabrics that could create fantastic, one of a kind accessories. This one...a Banana Republic shirt I only wore onc, and the lace came from a juicy couture shirt that I tore a hole in :) This is my attempt at going green!!
ReplyDeleteso creative & beautiful photos...

I love the pictures! Does she ever quit smiling?:)
ReplyDeleteI have been reading a book called, "The Green Beauty Guide" about all the things we put on our skin and all the stuff in those products. Another overwhelming part of the 'what are we doing to ourselves and our earth' topic. I have also found that it is really hard to find lotion, soap, etc. without one or more of the toxins that I want to eliminate. Even in so called 'health stores'. My husband is all the while, rolling his eyes and telling me that changing products we use in the house and on our skin isn't going to 'save' us from all the crap outside. But my take is, even a little helps, right?
Also, my daughter has suffered with awful ecxema since she was a baby, we have tried so many lotions and creams and prescriptions. Recently, I found a lotion with the least amount of toxic ingredients. (to hold us over until the one I ordered online gets here) I added lavender oil and chamomile oil and her skin is better than it has been in forever, plus right now is an awful allergy season here! So apparently the toxins in lotions do irritate, at least sensitive skin!
Sorry so long. :)
Are you really green or does it work for this post since you're compensated by the companies you promote as noted at the bottom of your article?
ReplyDeleteDo I sound like a green person to you?
ReplyDeleteDid you read my post or are you just trying to be a jerk?
I switched to Seventh Generation cleaners awhile ago. The smell of the cleaners with toxins was giving me a headache every time I cleaned. The last time I cleaned with a non-green cleaner and I got a headache, I thought, "Well, this can't be good." I threw them all out and went to Target and bought a bunch of Seventh Generation stuff and haven't looked back. They smell great, they work wonders and no more headaches. They also aren't as pricey as other green products, and they offer coupons on their website that really help with the cost.
ReplyDeleteHahaha! I was wondering if you got haters like Anonymous upstairs!
ReplyDeleteGo ahead and you get your compensation on! Your post did not seem skewed toward your sponsor, and stayed true to the voice you consistently write in.
I cannot stop laughing at "move to a bubble and eat dirt." You are too hilarious. I agree with OK Dani, she makes a really good point. I just try to do my little part to help my community and the environment. I'm better at it some days than on other days but I don't beat myself up over it. :). Adorable photos of lil J (as usual). :)
ReplyDeleteHehe, I'm totally with you and Dani too Ms. K. I'm trying to do what I can but honestly, when it comes to "green" marketing... I'm pretty skeptical. (hence the vinegar trial). Thanks for commenting y'all!
